Southwest To Add 5 New Cities From Denver

Thu Jun 28, 2007 2:04 pm

Southwest is continuing its rapid growth from Denver International Airport by adding 14 new flights and 5 new cities. Seattle, Albuquerque, Oklahoma City, Austin and Amarillo will all be served from Denver on SW starting Nov. 4. In addition SW is increasing service on DEN-SLC and DEN-BNA. It looks like DEN is performing well for them. I'm surprised about the Seattle service. There is a lot of competition on the DEN-SEA segment. Below is the article link from the Rocky Mountain News:

Very nice! I'd love for them to extend a few SEA flights to ANC... or beyond  Smile

DEN obviously came out the big winner in WN's revamped schedule. Good to see service return to AMA. A second flight to my home base, BNA is interesting as well. F9 is doing 4x daily this summer, not sure what the fall/winter looks like - but the 2 LCC's are squeezing UA on that route. I was at BNA awaiting boarding for my own F9 flight to DEN recently and went over to the UA gate. I counted less than 20 people in the waiting area 30 minutes before departure while my flight was totally full.

I think WN's continued build up at DEN is going to hurt UA more than F9, especially with the customer service nightmare UA is going through. Should be an interesting fight.

I, like DIA77, think this news deserves its own thread.

This now accounts for 16 destinations served by WN nonstop from DEN...that's not taken lightly around here...it is all over our news media sources.
Ding! You are now free to keep supporting Frontier.

Interesting. Most people were speculating that DEN wasn't doing well for WN. This seems to disprove that. It also probably greenlights the expansion of C concourse since Southwest will probably need 3 more gates for these flights. It also puts Southwest at DEN at roughly the same size as F9 was during the proposed F9 and WP merger.

I'm still hoping to see SAN-DEN service sometime soon (and kinda surprised it hasn't appeared already.) I can understand that OAK was the first California city announced since there is only one incumbent on that route but with only 2 competitors currently flying between SAN and DEN, I expected that route to be served long before SEA-DEN (with 3 cx already competing for the many pax there.)

I do agree that DEN seems to be pretty darned high on the WN list of "places to do" these days; either they are ignoring lousy numbers and are determined to grab market share anyway (just to prove they made a good decision to return there) or the numbers are really heading up and getting healthier as the summer goes on.

Congrat's to DEN on a big expansion this round!
