Everyone who gets hired by an airline has to get drug tested. This is usually the first screening test done on new hires since it is the cheapest. If you have a 'Hot' Urinalisis then of course you don't get the job.
Airlines usually have to have cause to do a drug test. Causes usualy are if you have an accident or wreck something at work or show up visably stoned. A lot of companies will set up a treatment program for their workers.
The FAA requires that people that hold "Safety Related" jobs have to be randomly samples. People in this catagory include Pilots, Dispatchers and Mechanics. They also set the rules as far as how large of percentage of a companies workforce need to be tested within a year. Last year that percentage was lowered because of the low number of positive tests. I think the actual count was in the tenths of one percent. This lowers the number of tests and save the company money.
The Feds also strengthened the rules for alchol infractions too. Now I belive that if you have two instances of getting busted for either drug or alchol abuse or driving drunk you can't hold an airline job. I don't remember the exact wording of the rules though
