Croatia Airlines Signs Codeshare With United

UNITED and Croatia Airlines, both Star Alliance members, signed a landmark codeshare deal, which is subject government approval.

Croatia Airlines will codeshare on UNITED to its US Gateways while UNITED will codeshare into Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik.

Croatia is a beautiful country with tourism expanding year after year so lets hope this relationship works for both.

It is not much of a surprise because both UA and OU are members of Star Alliance

They have tried to do a codeshare in the past without much luck and the US DOT rejected UA's application. Looks as though they may succeed this time. Incidentally the first application was rejected because the US and Croatia lacked an air bilateral agreement, nothing has changed though. No bilateral but it looks as though this might get through as AA recently received an OK from the DOT to place a codeshare with Malev to destinations in Croatia via Budapest.

Will this mean my bags will be checked through to Split when I check in at IAD? I am flying UA to FRA and OU to SPU. I have been told I do not clear customs in FRA.

You still have to go through Zagreb to get anywhere in the Croatian airline system. I have found Croatian airlines to seldom be a good option when travelling from the to or from the states unless you live in Zagreb. Austrian and Lufthansa have better connections. Still, it's a good airline and a beautiful but now overcrowded country.

According to my itinerary, my flight is non-stop from FRA to SPU. The return is non-stop to MUC.

This is not really correct. Its very easy to connect from Split and Dubrovnik to American/anywhere via Frankfurt or Munich. Austrian has a small presence on the Croatian coast during summer and Lufthansa doesn't fly to the coast at all.

More often than not you would connect from Austrian airlines to OU to continue your journey.

Oh yes, that won't be a problem. A few years ago there were issues in Dubrovnik airport about not having computers to do that, but its fixed i think and Split is certainly ok as i fly via Budapest to Split alot.

i just flew from LAX to DBV just a few days ago... enjoying the beautiful weather and sea. I assume that the United flight will be a 767 or 777 from IAD to Zagreb with Croatian Airlines to DBV and Split. Am I correct? Anybody know when the flights will start? Hopefully, by next summer 2008!

Don't become too exited. They will codeshare through FRA and MUC, maybe also ZRH and VIE, if they ever start flying to the latter one.

I believe these are seasonal flights. Lots of people are doing seasonal flights to Split and Dubrovnik but you can't always count on these. Besides, the coast is best when the drunken Brits are not there puking on everything.
