Icelandair 787 Routes

Sat Jun 30, 2007 2:47 am

I searched for a discussion about this but found nothing.
I was wondering what routes Icelandair will use with the 787. Will MSP and Orlando see an Icelandair 787 since the 787 is for long haul routes. And the 757s with winglets can barley make it to MSP. And it looks like there is enough demand for the MSP-Iceland and Orlando-Iceland routes to be upgraded to 787s.

Why? They should make it with ease, the winglet equipped 752's have a 4100nm range, where-as MSP-KEF is just under 3000nm. LHR will be the first to see the 787, you can almost be sure of that, probably along with New York, and Paris.

As well as routes were thE capacity is needed, such as LHR and CPH, I suspect they will be used for new routes were the range is needed, maybe Asia, or a return to the West Coast of the US - SFO again, or LAX or SEA

The range is that long for the 757 with winglets. My mistake.

For Comparisson ~ MCO-KEF > 3534 Miles

Based on a 3719 NM range for the 757-200 you have :

Seattle-KEF > 3622 Miles

Kansas City-KEF > 3301 Miles

Tel Aviv-KEF > 3283 Miles

Denver-KEF > 3568 Miles

Kiev-KEF > 2139 Miles

Moscow-KEF > 2069 Miles

Memphis-KEF > 3402 Miles

So all of the above could be flown with a FI 752 if need be...

IF they don't lease them out, or sell the delivery slots . .

BOS, BWI, CPH, and LHR are four places that will see them.

My guess is that FI will use them as 767 replacements and for wetleasing with Loftleidir. Very few FI routes demand a 788, but seeing as the economy of the plane is very good and the range as well, that would be my guess.

It is a bit big for FI in my humble opinion.

I read in an artical in 'Airliner World' that they would be used on LHR, CPH and other high routes, plus open new routes to India and Asia. they were also looking at smaller planes to seat around the 130 seats to replace the 757's in around 5-10 years time.

Middle East / India routes would make sence to me as FI does a lot of visiting friends and family trade and people are more willing to connect to save a buck. However placing them with Loftleidir for wet lease does make sence as delivery slots are already tied up for some time.

I'm not sure--someone correct me if I'm wrong--but they used to have flights to Beijing for a little while back...
