LAX Tbit AA And UA Arrivals...

Tue Jul 03, 2007 3:53 pm

I was waiting for a friend at TBIT today and noticed that UA has Mexico arrivals at TBIT, and AA had a mexico arrival as well. Why are they doing this? AA has FIS at T4 and UA has FIS at T7. And of course AS had a couple Mexico arrivals as well.

Is there an LAX rule that all Mexico arrivals happen in TBIT?

As far as I know,
AA has FIS in T4 where they can clear flights from Mexico.
DL has FIS in T5 where they can clear flights from Mexico [as well as AM].
UA has FIS in T6 where they can clear all their international flights.
AS uses TBIT since T3 doesn't have FIS available there. BTW, why don't they use T2 instead with all of the horrible overcrowding in TBIT?

My AS CUN-LAX flight used TBIT.

We even got to ride a new slinky bus  wink

Actually, it is connected to both T6 and T7

T2 can be worse, because it is smaller. Also, gate space is at more of a premium and on the opposite side from where AS operates.

None at all

I was looking at United's flight status today and all 3 flights from Mexico (2 from MEX, 1 from CUN) arrived at T7. I have noticed that there have been phantom United flights up on the TBIT board before. I am not sure if they are codeshares or something else.

Thanks for the information N1120A. I apreciate it. It now makes complete sense to me. Since AS has many Mexico flights that arrive around the same time in the afternoon, do a significant number end up having to park or be towed to remote?
I so wish AS could get ahold of some of those T5 gates soley for international flights as it would make the experience for the AS customer much much better and hopefully for the staff as well, but that's pretty much a dead in the water issue at this point [brought this up as it just seems T5 FIS doesn't get used much at all, when it could be put to a much more optimal use.].

Not a significant number. You will notice that a large number just back into the alley and turn into their gate at T3.

AS would probably be the key customer if LAWA ever evict Delta from T5. The key is, AS needs to actually pony up some dough for it, which they don't like to do.

IIRC, the FIS in TBIT is 24 hours, whereas the FIS in the individual terminals have limited hours. Is it possible that these flights came in when the FIS in T7 or T4 was closed?

With the recent expansion of Delta at LAX, I don't believe Delta is going to give up Western's former "Oasis at Terminal 5" any time soon. I also thought AA had been positioning to get Terminal 5 as well if DL had not emerged from BK.

Are the flights not just codeshares?

AA only has I think it is two gates at LAX connected to customs. It could be possible that with the QF flights as well as its own needs to gate widebody aircraft, as well as its central American arrivals (SAL and SJO) it was not operationally feasable to accomodate the flight in terminal 4 at the time.

Almost correct ...

All LAX FIS facilities have operating hours. T2, T-4, T-5 and T-6/7 have core hours, and flights outside of those will go clear at TBIT. UA's T-6/7 for instance closes in the late afternoon after the LHR arrival. Does not make sense to staff a facility with two dozen staff with without any activity for several hours waiting for a small narrowbody flight from Mexico.

TBIT on the other hand has core operating hours of 0700-Midnight which with pre-approval can be extended to process flights that are running late. (or not -- remember Copa Tijuana incident in late May?).

For those telling me where the flights "should" go, yeah, I know. LAX is my home airport. That's why I asked why they weren't going there...  Wink

They weren't phantom flights. They weren't code shares since no partner was listed. I watched the people arrive and they were from the airlines listed (AA, UA) according to their luggage tags. They were Mexico City, Cabo, etc. flights.

Makes a lot of sense.

That explains it. It was about 8PM, so FIS is closed according to your schedule at T4 and T7. Must be confusing for people meeting these flights if they don't know. While you park at P4 for TBIT and T4, people who parked at P7 only to find out they have to go to TBIT would be less thrilled.

I have flown in on UA's 935 on a couple of occasions and if your behind schedule they seem to shut up customs in UA's terminal and we have cleared customs through TBIT.

UA uses TBIT to clear MEX flight very often, nothing new here. Back in the days, UA A320 would pull right into TBIT gates and then tow to UA. Nowadays, they pull into T7 and bus to TIBT. Or often time UA will use TBIT if they have too many flights coming into T7.
