Tiger Airways To Commence SIN-India Flights In Oct

Tue Jul 03, 2007 10:54 pm

Tiger Airways will commence flights from Singapore to Chennai (MAA) and Cochin (COK) in India from late Oct.

Read news article http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stori...cific_business/view/285961/1/.html

Flight schedules are available from http://booking.tigerairways.com/flight/flight-schedules-winter07.php

One-way fare starts from S$59.99 before taxes.

I am wondering what impact this will have on the airlines both from Singapore and India currently plying routes between Singapore and MAA/COK.

Interesting, given that MAA is going double-daily SQ and IC and 9W also offering flights on that sector, I wonder if another flight would depress yields, particularly for IC and 9W since they depend on O&D (OK, so 9W has a tie-up with QF, but still) as will Tiger.

Don't forget IX, which has up to 2x daily flights MAA-SIN.

TR's fares seem quite a bit cheaper than IX's: a minimum all-in one-way fare with TR is about SGD$157, whereas with IX it's about SGD$254.

Fares FROM India are even cheaper: the minimum one-way all-in fare either COK-SIN or MAA-SIN is about USD$97. That seems like a decently inexpensive fare - and about half IX's minimum one-way all-in fare.

TR will fly thrice-weekly SIN-COK and four-weekly SIN-MAA.

I wonder whether TR will at some stage begin SIN-BLR and SIN-CCU. Didn't 3K or Valuair operate these routes?

Cochin (COK)

I got the email with the SGD59.99 fares and was wondering where Kochi was. Good news. But I wonder why TR doesn't compete with JQ or SQ on more routes? ie, DPS, BKI, etc.

Cheers

Permission! In that part of the world, as in numerous others, it's very hard to acquire permission to operate between certain countries. One example is Singapore-Indonesia. Another is Singapore-Malaysia, although that's presently being liberalised (I don't think it's yet happened).

SQ owns TR.

Just to clarify: I don't think you mean JQ but rather 3K, which is SIN-based JetstarAsia (3K). 3K doesn't operate SIN-Indonesia; that's down to VF (Valuair).

Formerly Cochin, in Kerala, south-west India, . See: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/mapshell...ndian_subcontinent/india/india.htm

In the month of May, we had 98,000 visitors from India to Singapore. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stori...aporelocalnews/view/285304/1/.html

I am sure with the launch of these new flights, the region here can expect a lot of growth in terms of visitor arrivals from India.

Cochin is bang in the middle of Kerala, and is a fairly affluent part of Inida. Can TR's A320's make it further north in India - even if they fly to non-metro airports such as AMD or GOI? I'm not even asking about north India which would be at the edge of range for A32x's.

Plus 3K's services to BLR and CCU did flop last year!

3K failed because their prices were not of an LCC, why would anyone want to fly them if the charges are of full service carrier and then you have to buy everything!
