Mesa Air orders $334 million of Bombardier jets

MONTREAL, July 3 (Reuters) - Bombardier Inc. said on Tuesday that Mesa Air Group Inc. will buy 10 of its CRJ700 regional jets in an order valued at $334 million.

Two of the CRJ700 orders are conversions from previously ordered CRJ900 aircraft. The jets will be operated for United Airlines.

So let me get this right? They are changing two orders from CRJ900 to CRJ700??? That doesnt seem to make sense. You get 20 more seats on the 900 for essentially FREE!!!!

2 words: "SCOPE CLAUSE."

UA Pilot union would not allow regionals to fly more than 70-seat aircraft. Whether this changes in the future, who knows?

Incidentally, it is my understanding that Mesa CR7 operation is not nearly as bad as people are making it out to be. It is on the CRJ side that they have problems.

Also, note that on http://www.mesa-air.com/ they are offering signing bonuses to anyone with UAX experience...

This Mesa news I suppose is the result of United's public call to its UAX carriers for as many 70 seaters as they can provide.

United's longer term stated goal is to swap 50 seater jets for the larger 2 class versions while growing the UAX operation overall with the ability to replace more and more marginal mainline flying. A number of 737s are likely to leave the fleet this coming winter due lease expiry making the 70 seater even more important.

YV CR7 operation runs very well...it is the CRJ 100/200 that cause the biggest problems w/ the UAX operation. It is a combination of old aircraft, ATC and UAX ground handling. To see YV getting more CR7 is great as it will help to curtail more of the operational unrest seen on YV's UAX ops.

Rumor is that the CR7s will be replacing the older 100/200 in the YV fleet, freeing those birds up for JO's partnership with Shinzhin Airlines in Red China.

My two cents.. They are ordering CRJ700NGs, not the classic (if thats the name for it). That means more efficient, larger windows and a big obsession with manufacturers today: composite materials  Smile . They'll also be the launch customer for the CRJ700NG. I guess its something like Airbus convincing their A350 customers to switch to A350XWB.

Yes the UA ground handling of Mesa flights that are not Mesa operated stations with Mesa people is horrible, especially in ORD and IAD. Mesa is not the only one who has these problems with UA on the express side. Mesa may not be perfect but you can't place all the blame for the poor numbers solely on them and UA knows this.

Ordering more planes in my opinion is usually a good thing. It is good for Mesa that they have enough demand for 10 more of the Cr7's. It is also good for Bombardier that they are getting more orders for the CRJ series. It is also good in a sense that the new order that Mesa just placed they will be receiving the new nxt gen CRJ with more of the composite stuff. I'm am also very surprised that there have been so many new orders for the CRJ-900 series. It seemed like for a long while that Mesa was gonna be the only operator of the aircraft.

Do any of you think that Mesa in the future will order the CRJ-1000?

I guess there's a reason they say: "Ignorance is bliss" The above quote is a textbook example.

First of all, UA does not handle YV operations at IAD. YV is perfectly capable of screwing it up on their own. UA has had to pull down YV flying from more than one hub due to YV's shortage of pilots. I'll be the first to say that YV has a shitty contract with UA, but that's YV's own fault, no one forced them to sign a contract. YV is critically short on pilots and losing them at a 3 loss/1 gain ratio per month. If YV really cared anything about their service, they'd drop the money-losing Hawaii debacle and get those pilots back flying the (money making) fee-for-departure lines that they are now losing left and right. Mesa only proves that as bad as everyone thinks management is at their legacy, it's plenty worse at YV...

I couldn't have said your whole point any better myself.

Why is mesa buying more planes when they can't even fly the ones they have!?!!?!?!

Do max aircraft weight play a part in this too? SkyWest/Delta has been/is flying the CRJ900 with 70 seats (10F/60Y), so wouldn't that be perfect for UAX too? The extra room would allow for more baggage and cargo space and more galleys so UA could offer more food to their F pax, which might persuade the F pax to fly them again...?

10 more beautiful CRJ700s to grace the skies. Congrats to BBD, they're having a great year, order-wise  thumbsup

Maybe ORD & IAD, but i don't see problems at the outstations.

I never said they did. I was pointing out the problems at the 2 hubs which YV flights are not handled by Mesa.

What are you talking about? Do you work for Mesa? Do you know what actaully goes on there? I would suggest that when ripping Mesa you rip the management and leave the other employees out of it because Mesa has some of the hardest working employees in the business that are mearly caught up in what J.O. and the rest of his management team are doing.

Out of curiosity, roughly what are the fees per departure that Mesa vs Skywest (or another regional) would charge United?

yes, Mesa has no time requirements for FO's now I know several 300 hour Multi CFII people that can hardly wait to get into a CRJ.

I dunno about that. They still list 500/100 - but often time listed publicly is not what they're taking, especially in this tight of a hiring environment.

I know Eagle still says 750/100 or something like that, but they're having a real hard time filling classes and are now taking pilots with less.

It would be nice to dump the 200's...they break down constantly. I doubt they will order anymore 900's for the USX operation...from what I hear we have no intention of renewing the contract with YV once it expires...especially after last week's debacle. Be interesting to see who replaces YV in the west!
