What, WN doesn't have fire suppression in the cargo hold?
Legend did... in ancient DC-9s... I would think that litigation-savvy Southwest would have already done this.

We did--it all became required by FARs in the post-ValuJet 592 accident era.

Don't go by the subject line of the thread here either--"WN Flight Lands At SEA After Fire" is a little different than the "Plane lands at Sea-Tac after report of fire onboard" [My italics] in the media's subject description. The article also mentions that "Pilots told firefighters that the fire was extinguished in flight.." which means that the "fire" light came on in the cockpit, the extinguisher was used, and the fire light went out. Whether or not it was an actual fire, or just a malfunctioning light is another matter entirely.

King5.com has pretty good video of the incident.

Mike - I went with the title after the words of the article, which have since been changed. The article has been updated to say there was no fire.

From the King5 report:

An airline spokeswoman said there was no fire, and the problem was a malfunction with the sensor in the cargo area.

Funny how the media changed the title in the original link to "Sensor causes fire scare on flight landing at Sea-Tac", but just typical of the "report first and ensure accuracy and context later" mentality. I'm sure they'll email apologies to the first group of folks who read the original and were unnecessarily scared poopless...

That is the problem with media today. They get a "report", or hear a rumor, and they want to be the first to jump on it. It creates news, and it keeps people glued to the tube. Thankfully it was a false alarm! While the Valujet tragedy still haunts me, I am glad that measures have been taken to avoid such another tragedy.

On a side note, has anyone ever observed what the fire suppression system can do in the cargo holds? I begin to wonder how powerful the system is. Is it water, or a powder form? I also wonder if it damaged anyones luggage?

Good to know, and thanks for the update on the FAR's. I have them, under a thick layer of dust, in my closet. I also have allergies, so I try not to stir up that dust!

Glad this was a false alarm!

It's a halon-based system, unless they've changed it to some other type of gas that more CFC-friendly. No water or powder.
