Last TWA 727 Flight Video

Sat Jul 07, 2007 12:11 pm

Found this on YouTube a while ago, but never got around to posting it here. Figured there should be some people whom this would make happy. TWA's last revenue 727 flight from MSY-STL (i forget the exact date but sometime in 2000). Also this is the same aircraft (N64339) which was hijacked as TWA 847.

Really miss TWA !!!

That was cool to watch. Sad to see all the 727's gone. I flew so many times on them with UA.
Now I only see them on a rare occasion usually in UPS colors or US Postal Services.

Same goes for the DC10. Soooo many flights on SK, UA and NW over the years. Now even NW has gotten rid of them.

I wonder if anyone will design a new tri-motor passenger jet.

I was wondering if the TWA 727 was out of the fleet before the AA takeover, but looks like it was right before.

Yes I remember just ten years ago practically all of the Legacies were still flying the 727 - at least NW, UA, AA and DL, plus TW. I am not sure if they were out of US and CO fleet by then.

Fortunately I still see a couple down here at MCO still - Capital Cargo, DHL and Kitty Hawk ones.

Wow, wow, wow. That really jarred the memory banks. All gates occupied on C, big red & whites, class people, a busy STL. I did not work for TWA so I have one question, what was with the pig? Im assuming it was a nickname for the 727 but I'd love to hear about it.

I hear ya man. Watching that video just tugged at my heart. I was there that day when the good 'ole three holer did the fly by. I just remember a slew of ramp workers wandering closer to the runway to get a good glimpse at her.

TWA may be gone, but they are still flying to many people.  brokenheart

I think it was called the pig because of the way it kinda waddled when it taxied? Anyone else?

WOW! Memories. I grew up flying TWA and living under the ILS to the 31's at JFK which always was TWA 727 city. I miss it so dearlyu. It actually alomost hurts when I drive past the old TWA terminal and it is dead and quiet at JFK.

Wow! What an amazing video about an amazing airplane! They don't make 'em like that anymore!

A real treat to watch!

That's a really interesting tidbit regarding the fact that the final revenue flight was flown on the same aircraft that was TW 847. I didn't know that!

There was another nice video listed on the right, I think labelled "the Legacy of TWA". Somone put together a collage of TWA aircraft ranging from the DC-3 through the 747. Using what looks like Microsoft Flight Sim, it appears that there is a "plot" that all the aircraft meet at JFK for the last time.

Nicely done.

yes, Unfortunately TWA was doing a great job getting their costs down by parking L10s and 727s before other airline parked their three holers, but it wasnt enough..by late 2000 TWA had a pretty efficent fleet with 717s M80s, 757s and 763s. If they only had been able to do so back in the mid 1990s maybe they might have made it.

The one doing the last flight was "Miss Piggy". There's some photos and a trip report there as well.

Loved the ol' 727s. The first one I flew with TWA was a 727-100 SFO-LAS in November 1980, the weekend the MGM burned.

great video-loved that airplane-
I flew to MIA in 1983? just to ride the last TWA 707 trip--MIA-JFK in a 707-331B-lost the reg of that one--
they made very little fuss about it-served us champagne but most pax couldn't care less--
I took everything not nailed to the airplane with me-

as we approached JFK from the south we were outside 250kt speed limit below 10,000 feet, so the Captain let it rip--
320 kts at 3,000 feet was very loud, fast and way cool!!

turns out, they put pax on the airplane the next day to reposition it to Kansas City, so I was on the last planned trip, not the last actual one

anyway, miss the airline and the great Boeings

My very first flights on the 727 were in 1987 on TWA......STL-MCI on 737-031 N833TW and back from MCI-STL on 727-231, N12303. They were, unfortunately the only two TWA 727s that I ever had the opprtunity to fly on.. Ironically, the Captain of the 727 ride over to Kansas City was John Zaeske, that lives in the same town I do> whats even stranger is that his Mother delviered me at birth and his Father was the doctor that saved my life as an infant from a complication at birth. Who would have thought just 21 years later I would be flown by him on my very first 727 ride???......Did I mention his Sister was the social worker I saw when I was in grade school?? Spooky eh? Anyway..............

I miss seeing ANY 727s as they are too rare nowadays and unfortunately relegated to carrying cargo or in 3rd world countries. Oh well...

Yes, yes and yes: it was the people that made TWA special. I miss that airline a lot, too.

And thanks for posting the video: hearing the engines as they approached the gate brought me back to many, many happy trips on 727's. Very distinctive sound those tri-motors.

And also, for folks that will "never understand" what all the TWA fuss was about because they didn't have the fortune to fly with (or for) them, consider this: TWA was called a "legacy" airline not only because it was one of the first carriers but also because they had a Legacy to leave, a proud history to display, and millions of flying hours of experience that will never be equaled again.

Sure, Southwest is fun, Delta is doing better, trans-atlantic travel is getting more comfortable again...but. Some things don't always get better with time and some things that have been lost should not have been. At least it will not be forgotten around here.

My last 727 flight was on TWA between St. Louis and San Antonio in July of 1998. I enjoy seeing the CAT 727 land at Tucson on a frequent basis.

Other 727 observations.
I saw a Champion 727 in Tucson last Tuesday and noticed a Kingfisher 727 parked on the west end of the airport where planes are in storage. This one had the doors open and work being done on it.

My first 727 flight was with Piedmont in 1987. I first flew a TWA 727 in 1989 and after that many more 727's with TWA. I was even lucky enough to fly on two different 727-31's with them in Europe in 1989 including this bird.

I miss TWA. When I first set foot into Saint Louis in the fall of 2000, I was surrounded by TWA flight attendants in my apartment building. I'd make trips on my own to Chicago and Indy to visit family and friends back home often and would often run into people I knew coming and going from the airport. There'd be several times I'd be getting off a plane getting ready to go home and do homework for classes when I'd get the invite to just get on a plane with them while we went out to Phoenix or wherever and did a red-eye turn and do my homework on the plane. We'd walk down to the gate, they knew the gate agent or whomever, and they'd just print me off a ticket and gave me a seat. We'd fly out, I'd do homework and they'd stop by and we'd all sit in the back and gossip the whole way out there. It was a grand ole time.

There'd be several times I'd just be sitting in my apartment, I'd get a knock on the door with saying "I picked up a trip, the load is light, come with!" and off we'd go to the airport.

The days didn't last long, but those sure were the days...
if assumptions could fly, airliners.net would be the world's busiest airport

Thanks for posting those videos. Especially the second link with the intra-euro routes video.

Those TWA employees were really amazing. I remember flying from PHX-STL on TWA in coach and I asked for an iced tea to drink when I was younger. The FA stated they had none, but she offered to go to FC to make me an iced tea herself. She got the hot water and made tea then added ice and lemon and some sugar. I was impressed. Can you imagine that happening today on a US airline?

Yup- and this ship actually still had the patch marks from bullet rounds I believe inside some of the bins. I'd still love to have someone verify this for me, but I recall seeing bright white patch marks inside what was a yellowed, dingy overhead bin at one time and hearing that was the story.

Actually, and I might be wrong here because I'm going from memory, but if this last flight was 4339, I think that was called "Swine Star of Beirut" because it was the TW847 hijacked A/C.

I have the full list on a hard copy somewhere, I'll have to dig it up and post it here. There are some great nicknames!!
