Bidets On ANA 787

Sun Jul 08, 2007 5:08 pm

Looks like ANA will be installing bidets on their 787...
I guess that the Japanese are really into them...
I'm not but to each their own..

Quote:

The launch customer for the plane, Japan's All Nippon Airways, is among the host of airlines here to check out Boeing's handiwork. The carrier plans to pack its aircraft with new features, including the first airliner bidets. The first 787 appears to be on track to be delivered in May, the carrier says.

wonder what future improvement we can expect to see onboard the 787 (and the A380 as well)

Well that Russian VIP IL-86 had bidets so it's certainly a proven concept.

I'm truly enamored with bidets, but I'm not sure I'd use one on an airliner. How often would that get cleaned? They do have those self-cleaning models but...  boggled

I would imagine when they say "bidet" they actually mean a Toto Washlet or similar: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washlet#Japanese_bidets

These are extremely popular and widespread in Japan. And for those who haven't tried one, they are fantastic!

Nope. Used before the toilet paper. They do a great job. You find them in public restrooms even, such as hotels, offices and some nicer restaurants. I have them in my home here, and now don't like having to use old-style ones when I travel back to the home country.

I must admit, I enjoyed them so much in Japan that I had one installed in my apartment in NY! Although they haven't caught on in a big way, they can easily be purchased and installed in the States.

In fact, they were in the news today--apparently Toto is stepping up its marketing campaign here, and as usual some folks are offended: http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/us/AP-ODD-Cheeky-Billboard.html

A bidet, is a paper less "butt rinsing device".

When you shower, you do wash your butt crack don't you? So a bidet is there acting like a quasi-shower for your butt crack while not needing to take off your clothes fully! Using only toilet paper... urgh. Not clean enough, unless you want skid marks in your under garments...

Maybe your parents have not thought you the proper method of cleaning your butt. Well, i don't need a firefighter hose, to make sure my butt is clean. When properly used, toilet paper can do the job, perfectly.

Huuh?? Never heard of bidets, ever, and I've been in Japan a few times. This is probably crude but how exactly do they work? Spray you then rinse you like in a car wash?? No Thanks, will stick to good ol' toilet paper.

On a different note, I was using a bathroom at ICN this past weekend on a layover and when I sat on the bowl, the freaking seat cover was hot, not warm but kinda hot. Kinda freaked me out coz that was definately a new weird feeling but I still can't figure out what was up with that. No wonder there were all kind of buttons on the side of the bowl with the light on 'auto'.

The bidets they are talking about must be those "Washlet" thingies incorporated into the toilet seats and the toilet itself.
If not, then they would have to install much larger lavatories to incorporate separate toilet and bidet fixtures. The only reason I would see airlines having bigger lavs would be for wheelchair access.

Hmmmmm......I 've just read the wikipedia description for a bidet. The history of the word is quite interesting.

(From Wikipedia)
"Bidet is a French word for pony (and in Old French, bider meant to trot). This etymology comes from the fact that one bestrides or rides a bidet much like one does a pony."

Actually the bidet ANA is talking about is not what you think. It's attached to the toilet seat and sprays water at the right place. It's very easy to use and very hygienic. I'm not one to ever sit on an airplane toilet seat but the Japanese toilet seats made by Toto have a self-cleaning mechanism. After each use the seats are cleaned with water. It takes about 6 seconds. they are everywhere in Japan and very popular.

Many Americans believe they are for women only because Americans' first major exposure was during the war. The soldiers would visit the bordellos, see the ladies using them and a myth was borne.

For my countrymen who have never used them, believe it, paper does not compare with water. Could you get your hands clean with dry paper? I have installed spray hoses at my toilets like I have seen in Asia. Lightened load, clean butt, walk away with a smile....

That's why a lot of those public restrooms also have toilet paper to dry off (and for us western folks to wipe). The sprayers
are pretty much those little spray nozzles you see on the kitchen sink so you are not drenching yourself while cleaning.
I haven't seen how those other people dry off,(and I don't want to),but I'd think that they'd take some paper towels into a stall with them.

Interestingly, the house at the Southfork Ranch (where the famous televsion show Dallas took place) has a bidet. I overheard one of my co-workers (we toured the place in 1999) mentioning afterwards that "there are two toilets in the master bathroom."  rotfl   rotfl   rotfl
