Interesting Observation Today - 7/8/2007 At DTW
I have just returned from a 4 day trip to Fort Myers. When we returned today on Northwest Flight #1109 (A-320) arriving at DTW at 12:21PM., we approached the city and instead of heading north of the airport like happens 99% of the time we circled around in Windsor in an effort to lose some altitude (spoilers somewhat up) and I thought "he isn't headed for 27L.". But thats just what we did. This is the first time in my whole life I have been on an airliner on approach to and landing on 27 left. Now keep in mind I could see to my right (as you would expect) aircraft taking off and landing on the 21s and 22s.
And then it hit me.
With 3R-21L closed for reconstruction that eliminates the usual intersection between 3R-21L and 27L. This means DTW has a bonus available runway for the duration of the construction. Not saying that they don't always have this option except at the present time the danger of an intersection is not present.
Years ago I was on a 707 that took off on 9L. That was a frequent occurrance back then at DTW. Of course back then all they had was 3-21 and 9-27. No Lefts, Rights, Centers or anytthing else.
