Um, it doesn't appear that they are actually closed; there's just a ground stop in effect.

Yeah - it's a mess. And all the flights from the WAS area that diverted to PHL, and finally got back off the gate, are now on average 2hour + taxi times. Two flight attendant colleagues of mine are stuck in the mess - they both say "Oh the humanity.....". (one in BWI, one in PHL).

And just for good measure - ATL and ORD just went on their afternoon TSTM ground delay programs. YUM - packed airplanes, no movement, and no protection for the passenges.

There are going to be lots of diversions today.

Current Ground Stops: BOS, BWI, DCA, EWR, IAD, LGA, ORD, PHL, TEB

Delay Programs: ATL, BOS, EWR, JFK, LGA, PHL

Two airspace flow programs as well in DC and Cleveland Centers.

Had a ground stop on my way to CLE this morning. In fact, the way the day started, my CO flight to EWR (EWR-BOS) was delayed over 2 hours due to lousy ceilings in BOS (I was sitting in the President's Club and couldn't even see more than a gate down that's how bad it was). Eventually, I got rebooked onto a flight to CLE, but we hit a ground stop in BOS then, at which point I realized my connection to CMH was shot there, and since I was to fly back to Boston tonight (only in CMH for a few hours), I got off the plane, went to the President's Club, claimed Trip in Vain (since I had no way of making it to CMH in time for what I needed to do) and got my money back.

And of course, right now, BOS is in a ground stop too due to thunderstorms; my flight back from CLE-BOS, scheduled for a 325p departure, is sitting on a taxiway in CLE right now caught in the middle of this ground stop. Really glad I claimed Trip in Vain...

It looks like every summer, we hear that air travel is going to get worse and worse. Yet I hear nothing about any plans to do anything about the problems. All I see are "hand wringing" officials warning the traveling public to be prepared for extensive delays, cancellations and problems. Is there not someone smart enough to realize that you can only have so many planes in the air and at the airport at any one given point in time?

It amazes me that while the FAA officials are saying that the ATC system is operating at or above capacity, the airlines are continuing to add service. When will someone realize that until systems (computer and other) are upgraded or changed, additional flights should be restricted?

Why are we continuing to turn a blind eye to the problems?  irked

Let's not forget that the airlines are challenging the current funding system for the FAA which is holding things up... I'm not saying that they don't have a valid point, but its' a hold up non the less to funding the upgrades...

F9 728 from DEN was diverted from DCA to IAD, after being in holding patterns west and south of DCA for almost an hour. After a 45 minute refueling stop, we took off again for the >10 minute hop over to DCA.

The world war II era ATC equipment is showing that the FAA is in need of more funds to upgrade their equipment. The problem is that the airlines only use 86% of the ATC services and but the airlines still pay for close to 99% of the funds. Therefore, with private charter planes only contributing the last 1% general aviation pays for close to nothing. Furthermore, upgrading the ATC systems all over the USA is imperative to keeping our skies safe and to reduce delays in congested areas.

Great job by jetBlue

I was on flight B6 334 MCO - IAD this afternoon and we were diverted to RDU. At all times, the flight deck and cabin crew informed us about what the knew. During the three hour delay, about half of this time in a holding pattern over South Carolina, we received several times mineral water and other refreshments. All five crew members were very, very friendly and patient with those among us, having outbount connection flights in IAD and being worried.

Compared to several similar weather related delays and diversions that I have expierenced with other carriers in North America and Europe, today's work of this B6 crew was by far the best. Very impressive handling of the situation by this crew, thank you.

My wife and and just got back from Las Vegas (trip report to follow), our flight CO# 1579 was scheduled to land at 7:44Pm. Someplace over the mid-West the pilot came over the pa to announce that we made such great time that we would be landing at 7PM, when we got to Pennsylvania the Captain came on again to notify us that the FAA was not allowing flights from the West to enter the NYC area. That began our trip up North of NYC where we circled, however the Captain (who btw did a fantastic job the whole way, really great crew tonight) notified us that we had a quick oppurtunity to make an approach to EWR from the North. He stated though that if we were told to hold one more time from the FAA the Captain and First Officer were going to take us to our alternate airport which was Stewart airport, we started decending quickly and through some really bumpy clouds we landed at EWR at 7:30.

They pad EWR's schedules so much and we made such good time coming back East that after all those holds and circling we pulled into the gate 8 minutes early, however once inside it was obvious the extent of the delays as announcments were being made of departure delays up to three hours. The CO service centers were packed.

I have another even more dramatic story about the flight to Las Vegas, but I will save that for my trip report.

You can see our flight tonight, where we started circling and where we headed North to wait.

FAA needs to quit wasting funds and actually complete a project or two in timely fashion. As for the GA argument, look up couple threads here or go look up AOPA and read the news there not CNN and the like.

Part of the problem in the northeast on Tuesday was an ATC radar problem that affected PHL and BWI/IAD/DCA. That created a backlog, and even once the radar was back in service, the normal traffic + backlog + afternoon storms = a big mess. We had stuff anywhere from 1-5 hours late. Lines of weather went through MDW as well.

Wednesday doesn't look to be much better. A cold front will be running about SHV to BGR, with rain/thunderstorms out ahead of it, and everything between BOS and CLT is going to get nailed by weather, with re-routes, and more ground stops and ground delay programs.

Looks like I picked the wrong day to be working the PHL desk....  Sad

Flight Diversions at LGA

AA 626, 1332

both of those went to CHS... i was doing CHS-ATL yesterday evening and saw 2 AA mainline there, found out they were diversions, and they were both there for a good 3-4 hours. 626 pulled into a gate after a while and let their pax off to buy food, 1332 sat out there for a while then later pulled into a gate also. There is no AA staff at CHS so the pilots had to play gate agent, was funny to see that.

UA had bad delayed there to IAD too, the poor UAX agent kept having to announce that the update time got pushed back an hout like 4 times. A loud cheer was heard around 6:45pm when he announced they would board the 2:30 flight to IAD.

I had a 1630 lcl departure out of Florida last night going to Teterboro. It started as a 1 hour update delay and turned into a 3 hour 18 minute ground stop. Normally we have the flexiblity to file to a differnent airport nearby but out of the New York metro area such as SWF but ATC was not allowing any departures from the south to take off if the destination was north of RDU. I have never seen such a thing as ATC would not even let us depart for BTV and overfly the whole NE mess. The only thing that I can deduce is that the WX in the mid atlantic was causing the enroute sectors to be totally saturated. I will say though that those storms in the mid atlantic were some monsters. Dispatch informed me that the NE departures were delayed a minimum of 90 minutes although when we landed at TEB at 2300 the mess had been cleaned up because there wasn't a delay to be seen and even EWR seemed to be flowing smoothly.

ORF would be high on my list with GSO, RDU, CLT and CAE as possiblities. Given the circumstances there are not many options to the north but MDT and PIT come to mind as they are a little further to the west.

I know a few comrades are going to have one hell of a day with LGA today for sure. Any bets that LGA has at least two ground stops more prior to midnight curfew? I bet if it keeps happening like so the curfew goes away. It does not help I bet that they are training new air traffic controllers at LGA right now.
There is plenty of room for Gods animals, right next to the mashed potatoes!
