Rumour: Changes To Qantas Logo

Wed Jul 11, 2007 1:07 pm

In today's edition of Crikey the Tips and Rumours section had the following comment:

"The Flying Kangaroo will soon be unveiling a new logo... or should I say slightly modernised"

Has anyone heard if these rumours are true?

I LOVE the flying Kangaroo Logo - and wouldnt actually mind if it was altered slightly to make it more modern but still kept the red triangular shape with the Kangaroo... but with a modern twig?

Now that was pretty damn funny! Sick, but funny.

I think most would agree that the Qantas logo is pretty well known throughout the world so a drastic change would probably not be smart. But some minor tweaking to bring it more up to date would be great. Possibly to coincide with delivery of their first A380?

checkmark  I hope to goodness that they do not consult the folk who did the logo for BHP Billiton. That is still awful years after the event. The old steel ladle might have been out of date but it was distinctive. And come to that, when did BHP have any interest in Broken Hill? They have not even been among the companies looking for another Broken Hill orebody.

I cannot see how you can update a kangaroo, even a flying one!

It does look good, but I flicked open the pic - uh oh City of Para!

The worst trip I ever had from Europe was on that plane. Blew a nose wheel in Rome. Lost two thrust reversers (same side) in Bangkok. Lost them again in Singapore. Were struck by lightning on the tail waiting for the repairs in Singapore, requiring another couple of hours of electrical fixing as the APU was not well. We then flew down to Melb. It was supposed to take us on to Sydney, but after some shuffling they parked it and found something else to take us to Sydney. I think we took over 40 hours for the epic.

Ouch, that seems like a flight from well. hell... Sorry to hear about that... I guess that isnt one of those "wonderful" QANTAS memories that we hear so many of.. I have one about as bad, but it involved Alitalia from Rome to Melbourne in the 1980's..

However comparing Alitalia and QANTAS is like comparing Darwin to Sydney..  rotfl

The kangaroo should never have been changed in the first place. There are quite a few airlines in the world still using their original brand and it hasn't harmed them. Granted the winged kangaroo only appeared in the 1940's (I think), but still it 'meant' QANTAS !

In all seriousness, I feel that the QANTAS tail is wonderfully bold, minimal, iconic. And it shouldn't be messed with, beyond some very minor tweaking to freshen it up - I don't think it needs even that. Even on Wunala Dreaming, they had the good sense not to mess with the 'roo.

It's good, but even knowing it's a kangaroo I have to get past those rabbity ears before I can see the thing as a kangaroo! Big grin

And I prefer the minimal QANTAS tail, just a kangaroo in a vast red desert. For me, that somehow captures the sheer size and emptiness of the country, and stirs a longing in me for travel across wide open spaces. It's a classic.

I loved the old Canadi>n "goose" design for the same reasons.

I remember when the new livery was introduced... almost immediately, my friends at QF started referring disparagingly to the new look as "The Great White Rat".
A while back, QF flirted with a promotional logo bending the red triangle into more of a sail shape. I thought it looked great, but it didn't really last long, and it didn't translate into a new potential design on the aircraft. My vote would be to put the wings back on the 'roo.
It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

Meh, I wouldn't change it. It's one of the most recognizeable liveries in the world, and embodies the continent from which it has come. I could however see minor additions to the fuselage - how about an indigenous Australian design for the nose or roof of the aircraft? I don't mean the whole aircraft (a la Wanulu Dreaming), but some kind of abbreviate design might look cool. And how about changing the fuselage from euro white to some bolder colour? Like dark blue (a la WN) or green?

I doubt if G knows either. The dots could be puffs of smoke, but that came about the time they spun off their major smokemaker as Bluescope Steel. I think I did read a rationalization, but it made no sense at all.

Yes, what happened to the Speedbird?

Quoting Halophila (Reply 35):

Well Australian colours are supposed to be green and gold for the wattle (the black wattles in my garden are about a week off turning golden yellow). But QF seem to be identified with the RED. So adhering to your first thoughts Hp, stick to red and white.

So QF is going to spend millions for a new design and a repainting of all the mainline planes? I personally can't see it as they have established the tail as the symbol of the company world wide - or at least where they fly.

Reminds me of the FUBAR when Coke decided it was time to bring out "New Coke".

QF has put a big yellow scarf around the Kangaroo to support the Wallabies Rugby Team (QF is their main sponsor). It looks kinda cheesy but as a one off its ok.

It doesn't work on the current roo because it is larger than the 'flying' roo and positioned differently. With a bit of a rearrangement it could work.

Speaking of retro, I think it would be cool to see 3 of the QF 738's in;
1. The original 707 livery
2. The V-Jet livery
3. The 70's livery with the ochre cheatline

The QANTAS colours are red and white, as Baroque said. The only time they deviated from that was from 1971-mid 80's, with the ochre cheatline.

The Kangaroo with wing look too tight on the tail. It does not look good. Also, the wing looks like a devil's wing cos it has a sharp point which is shown at the top of the wing.

The Kangaroo should stay but the typeface or font of QANTAS needs to be updated.

It's way to small and the looks like it's stuck in yesteryear. What font is it anyway?

It´s not a common font, so much is sure. I guess its a specially designed logo-font based on something like Gill Extrabold Italic.
I agree that it isn´t the most attractive and that QF should change to a more modern typographie.
The good-looking, recently restyled "The Spirit of Australia" is Frutiger Bold btw.

Whatever they do I hope QF retains the distinctive red triangle tail-design extending over the rear fuselage.

The QF livery is classic, IMHO there's nothing you could do to change it and make it "better" - much like AA's.

But ...

I like the 'roo on Australian Airlines tail. Modern and very Australian!

How about just painting it all in the Australian livery ... that was brilliant.

Couldn't agree more...put the bloody wings back on it...bring back the true FLYING Kangaroo.

Agreed. Now reference photo in reply 14. Two words: CHEAT LINES.

Please, QANTAS, don't fall victim to the current industry trend. The last thing we need is yet another horribly stylized and oversized logo spilling off of the tail.

Take a closer look at this pic from Toulouse showing one of the first (if not THE first) A380 for Qantas - well not exactly showing it - but you can see it in the background:

What I noticed was the red engine-pylons.

I only just realised how much better the Kangaroo looks with wings. But I think they should do another Wunala dreaming type scheme for the first A380 when that arrives, would look great!
