L-1011....Cargo Use?

Sun Jul 15, 2007 1:53 pm

Please dont flame me for this...just curious. Why were L-1011s never converted to freighters after most carriers quit using them for passengers? Most other threeholers (727,DC-10,MD-11)were picked up by cargo operators fairly quick. Is it just simply not efficient to use them for cargo use? or is there something im missing?

Getting parts for the early model RB211's on the L-1011's is a problem.

That's one of the reasons that TZ cited when they retired their L10 fleet.

Also, there are some reports here on A.net from DL insiders that DL was having trouble getting spares from Lockheed as well.

So the bottom line is that there's a difficult time getting parts for the L10. Great bird though.

In addition to the lack of spare parts, the L-1011 variants all lacked in payload and range vs. the DC-10-30F. And of course now the MD-11 greatly surpasses both.
There's nothing quite like a trijet.

Conversion programs would be rather expensive, due to the few numbers of the aircraft sold.

There were L-1011's that were converted to freighters. The RAF still has several variants they use for
troop support. As stated the Tri-star has a limited payload as opposed to the DC10 or even DC8
and spares are very hard to come by.
The list of airlines that have operated a L1011F include:
Kalitta
Fine Air
Arrow Air
Tradewinds
and a few carriers from Africa that didnt convert them as regular freighters, whereby the added a
cargo door and strengtend the main deck floor, but rather removed the passenger seats and used
the plane that way.

And 11 civil examples. More info can be found here: http://www.freightersonline.com/plane.aspx?a=24

There were 12 Tristars converted into freighters...6 Dash 1/100s & 6 Dash 200s. Only 2 are known to be still in service...line #12 (a dash 1) and line #212 (a dash 200). The rest having been parked and/or scrapped.
The website provided by A342 (reply 5) is good, but a bit incorrect.

According to www-ch-aviation.ch , it's one -1F, one -100F and ten -200Fs. One -200F already scrapped, the rest stored, none in service anymore.
