May be farther but faster to reach is Ciudad de la Mitad del Mundo, a small theme park exactly where the Equator line crosses Ecuador soil. It is not only exciting to be standing with one foot on the Norther Hemisphere while the other is in the south,

actually, it's not the REAL Equator line...they messed it up and found out about it like ten years ago. The real Euqator line is like 10 minutes with a car further north of La Mitad del Mundo, in a little village - don't recall the name.

Be very careful what you do. If you leave the airport make sure you use a reputable taxi company. There are lots of stories of scams on unsuspecting tourists. Make sure you know where you are going. My Dad traveled extensively up until recently in various places in South America. In Quito he was told to not leave the terminal until someone came inside the airport to get him. They told him in advance who it would be. He was told to not take a cab. That was about a year ago I believe.

However, as a UM, you won't be getting outside the airport, and I highly doubt you will even be able to decide where to go INSIDE the airport.
