DL SkyMiles Reward Tickets - SkySaver Availability

Tue Jul 17, 2007 7:55 am

I've searched the forums and couldn't find a specific answer to my question -- apologies if this was addressed elsewhere and I just missed it.

I booked two reward tickets IAD-ATL-DXB-ATL-IAD (7/21 departure, 7/27 return). At the time of booking, I could only obtain SkySaver tickets in First/Business on the outbound legs -- the only SkySaver availability on the return was in coach. Unfortunately, I lacked the SkyMiles for a SkyChoice return for both tickets, and I'd rather sit with my partner in coach than with just one of us traveling up front.

There are currently 25+ seats remaining in BusinessElite on the return DXB-ATL leg. I've noticed that additional SkySaver BizElite seats have started to appear on the DXB-ATL flights this week. My question is -- when does Delta begin releasing additional BusinessElite seats for SkySaver rewards? Or don't they do that, and I'm misunderstanding their practices?

Incidentally, I'm a SkyMiles Silver Medallion member -- I think I read somewhere that Medallion members receive more SkySaver availability than non-Medallion SkyMiles members.

Thank you for your help!

That's possible, but it's still pretty meager ...

SkySaver seats are few and far between - especially in the busy summer months. I tried to construct a transatlantic roundtrip - first in June, then end of July - but had to give it up as I was unable to get a roundtrip that made sense.

Would recommend using the CO award booking also, for browsing of seat inventory. It will also give an indication if seats are available on CO and NW, and in some cases also KLM.

I would sum up SkySaver seat availability succinctly in my opinion as "Limited".

Some people may think I am crazy - but I have, historically up until this year (no reward trip booked yet) - had much better luck calling DL directly - booking/agent fee and all.

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, I agree -- SkySaver seats are awfully restricted. I'm fairly confident that I saw SkySaver seats appear on flights that weren't available previously when the departure date was a week or less -- or, it could be my mind playing tricks on me. I asked the Delta representative today if they released seats as the arrival date approach (contingent upon passenger loads, obviously), and she said that she wasn't sure...she then told me that there were no CDG-IAD flights on Fridays (I knew it wasn't true, but I couldn't very well argue!). So, who knows.

Delta SkySaver = Delta Fraud!

I have over 633,000 Delta Skymiles. Why so many ? Because they are impossible to use at the SkySaver levels !

In contrast, American's program gives real opportunity to cash in on the lowest level.

What the idots in Delta's Marketing department fail to realize is that there are travelers out there like myself who choose a carrier based on the ease to cash in on the lowest level of reward travel.

I feel your pain with the issue. I had a little over 110K Skymiles and found it nearly impossible to get two SkySaver awards to Rome for September. I eventually got a rep on the phone managed to snag 2 seats for me around the dates we needed.

Call Delta, be as polite as can be, and have the rep search other Sky Team carriers.. good luck!

Hey if you aren't using them, give them to me  Wink I'm flying IND-SEA-IND this coming weekend using SkySaver tickets I booked last month. On the return red eye flight I did book in SkySaver First though. My advise it to always check to see if there is SkySaver first available before giving up hope. In the last 5 award tickets I've booked in the last 6 months, I haven't done any in SkyChoice. I have had to mix and match SkySaver first and coach though.

Makes a huge difference. I've found seats many times when logged into my account (I'm a Silver) than when I searched as a general member. Only time I've ever had to book SkyChoice was when I was traveling to MIA for New Year's and was booking 3 weeks in advance. I knew going into it that no airline, be it AA, DL, US, UA, NW or CO, would have any 25,000 mile seats for the time period I needed to book.

Yea, the joke is "Skymiles are only good if you want to go to Detroit in Febrauary on a Tuesday."

However, we've had success lately.
My sister and I are flying GSO-ATL-SAT tomorrow on Skymiles and the tickets were only booked in May. In 2005, we used SkySaver tickets to go to Hawaii. A family of 4. Granted, we called 331 days out to book the ticket, but we succeeded. My mother was able to use her Skymiles last year last minute for GSO-CVG and back when we had a death in the family. They also used Skymiles (SkySaver) to fly my sister to GSO-STL last summer. So the tickets are out there. You just have to look.

In October, I am using my miles to fly JAX-DTW-CVG and back for a wedding. I will be on NW, not DL as DL was out of Skysaver tickets from DAB into any city in the area at the time I booked, but I was able to find what I was looking for.

It is luck of the draw. I am platinum now, but I didnt used to be.

About a month ago I booked a trip for my girlfriend and I. LAX-ATL-PHL JFK-LAX in First for a 5 day trip over the upcoming labor day holiday. Got all the flights I wanted except for the ATL-PHL (we were to have a 3 hour layover) - waitlisted for the a better connection of only 1 hour - that cleared last week. So, it does work sometimes.

However, I also tried to do a trip in BizElite in Sept to Italy for the of us. Instead I bought M fares and will be using my Platunum upgrade certificates.

I have traveled to Europe every summer for the last 4 years. everytime in business, and everytime on a "saver" award. In those cases I took whatever I could get initially and then persistently called Delta to see if anything better had become available. it took alot of patience and alot of hours on the phone, but it always paid off. As well, every trip I was on AF for a portion of it.

I agree. I've been having problems booking a simple flight like ORD-ATL or ORD-SLC months ahead of time and being very flexible on the days. I've actually gotten so fed up with this I've switched over to focus on American and AAdvantage and I use their credit card now.
