Offshore San Diego Airport Proposal Resurfaces

Tue Jul 17, 2007 9:47 am

Interesting concept. Far fetched or ahead of it's time?

Press release:
http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/070716/20070716006312.html?.v=1

The concept/idea/visuals:
http://www.euphlotea.org/E/

10 miles offshore with a tunnel or ferries to get you from the coast to the airfield. Check in times, what 4 hours prior to departure? Not an island, rather a floating airfield anchored to the ocean's floor.

I didn't realize the plan was submersible! (Very clever thread title -- deliberate or accidental?)

I wonder who will pay for the tunnel? Who will pay for the floating airfield? Certainly not the good citizens of San Diego or California. Maybe the Martians will come down and install a flying saucer base there and open it up to our aircraft. It is as about as likely to happen.
Now so, have ye time fer a pint?

It'll never happen in a million years. Environmental concerns alone would kill it, not to mention the exorbitant costs. San Diego will probably never get a new airport unless the NIMBY's give in on Mirimar or a joint transborder facility is built with Tijuana, ala Euroairport, and that ain't gonna happen anytime soon either.

And with the submarine like conning tower amidships, one could be forgiven for expecting it to just as suddenly submerge to periscope depth or dive to the bottom.  Smile I'm incessantly amazed at the seemingly unlimited imaginations of those coming up with these ideas. Wonder where they will stake a claim next.

It will be very interesting to see which would prove more impossible, the DoD and the military letting go of Miramar, or getting investors to underwrite this humongous project. As the sayings go, "greed knows no bounds" and "one is born every minute."

I gotta agree... At least 2.4 gazillion bucks, and that's before cost overruns...

I'm waiting for one of the proponents to call the thing "unsinkable"....

And this pops up on here every couple of months. If I recall one of the threads someone placed large fans on the runway to assist with heavy fog. It will never happen in my lifetime.

That's for sure. In fact, I'd put my money on the Yellowstone super volcano to go off 20 years before this deal ever happens.

This looks exactly like the proposal that surfaced a few months ago, same pics and everything.

Yes, I quickly used paint to throw in a solution to the fog problem.

They have this amazing elaborate ideas, but that website sure does suck. For a proposal this big, they need to get a little better PR firm to make their website look like something better than a 7th grader and some photoshop time could come up with.

Actually, this is the perfect answer to a continued airport curfew in San Diego: at 11:29 every night, they fill the ballast tanks and the airport submerges about 5 feet; at 6:30 the next morning, blow the ballast and up she comes -- ready for business... and no more curfew violations. (Of course we might have to rethink the RON situation.  Wink )

I hope the creator of this wonderful idea knows how much comedy relief he supplies A.net with!  Smile

Pick a decade and this proposal comes up along with the international airport in Otey Mesa and the civilian/military expansion of Miramar. In the end nothing ever becomes of it and the grandiose idea is buried for another 10 years. The political and environmental obstacles to move an off-shore airport off the drawing boards to fruition are enormous. Moreover, the construction costs are nearly prohibitive. If San Diego were Hong Kong a man made island would be built starting next week. Unfortunately this is the United States where environmentalists will discover a new specie of fish indigenous to coastal Southern California and shut down a project faster than you can say "lawsuit."

The small outdated Lindbergh field will be serving the city for many years to come.

So, where's the car parking lot? I looked all over the picture and didn't find it along with hangers for maintenance, fuel farms, and docks for the rich and famous to tie up while they go off to Nice, or wherever for the week.

They could call it Titanic Airport. Unfortunately most of the the three letter airport codes for the name such as TTN, TNC, TIC, and such are in use, but there is one available code that would be fitting SOS.

Just like Kansai right! IF (and that's is an enormously huge if) they would consider it, ten miles offshore? It would be cheaper to buy Catalina Island and tow it south level it and call it Chek Lap Kok 2.

Those are all beneath the deck, of course. At both ends of the ramps are aircraft lifts able to carry A380s. The draft of the THING is such that it could accommodate a subsurface, self-contained community. Jetties can be seen at the ends of the floating airport.  Wink

One question, though. How deep is San Diego Bay?

It wouldn't be in the bay, that's why its called an offshore airport. Where they propose to locate this airport the water would be 1,200 to 3,000 ft/ 400 to 600 meters of water deep according to their website.

As soon as this airport is built (in Asia, that is, and towed to the San Diego coast), I will go out and buy a boat or 2, start a marina right off the end of runway 1-thru-36 (they will be able to rotate the thing to match the prevailing winds, right?), and then in 3 years, sue the SDAADSFA (San Diego Airport and Deep Sea Fishing Authority) for noise violations!  cheerful

How about run a service for us spotters and take us around the floating airport to take shots? I'd lay down a few bucks to do that! Big grin

You shoudl see their claims of "extensive CAT IIIc 0-0 use by the airlines" in response to the fog/marine layer questions. This airport would be IFR 60% of the time due to the marine layer.

They need a reality check first. The guy just laid claim on the ocean - like a land claim - and he's a freakin lawyer. WTF????

Quoting Highflier92660 (Reply 15):

Nah... He wants it built in pieces in China then dragged across the ocean. Chinese Floating Air Force Base maybe? Maybe Miramar really is needed to defend from the Chinese.. LOL

It would be cheaper still to just level Catalina adn move all SOCAL international flights there.

42' just enough to handle the largest Navy ships. It used to be basically a marsh or very shallow waterway that during low tide during the good ol days of wooden ships, they would get stuck. Most everything between Mission bay and San Diego bay is fill used from dredging including SAN. Anyways, enough of the history lesson and as others stated this idea is offshore.

ah hell, here's an old map. You can see where the river would meander between "false bay" (now Mission Bay after it was dredged) and San Diego bay. SAN is located at the river mouth.
