Lufthansa Flights To ACC Suspended

Tue Jul 17, 2007 2:22 pm

According to this article Lufthansa's service to ACC has been suspended for now due to the expiration of their flight permit.
Does anyone know how long this will last for?
What will happen to people that were booked for flights in this period?

I don't think that the flight permit of an airline such as LH expire and nobody doesn't notice that. The official reason why they didn't make the LOS-ACC-LOS segment was weather reasons. The a/c wasn't able to land and start safety with the actual wx situation, but don't ask me how the weather is!  Smile

Here's another article that has popped up about the LH situation. Does anyone have more insight to this because it just doesn't seem correct that such a situation can happen just out of the blue. But then again, it is African aviation that we are looking at here.

The Ghanese Government restricted LH's traffic rights to 2 flights per week. That is not enough to operate this route economicaly, as a result LH pulled out of ACC.

Looks like over protection of the home carrier has gone bad.

Its sad to see that this has brought another carrier to pull out from expanding in Ghana. This habit of "protecting the home carrier" has seen the likes of KLM, South African and Ethiopian all pull out from planned expansion in the country, and now the withdrawal of Lufthansa. Protecting it is not necessarily all bad, but when it causes competition to be lost and monopolies build again, then its the flying customers who eventually lose and have to pay ridiculously high ticket prices.

And then the national carrier is not even flying to Germany at all but to London. Doesn´t make any sense to me even from the Ghanaian point of view. From a broader point of view, isn´t it more valuable to have a reliable daily connection to Europe rather than protect its own 1-plane-national carrier?
