Fluffy Dice In The Cockpit!

Tue Jul 17, 2007 6:49 pm

On a recent internal flight on CO I took my seat in First and through the open cockpit door I could clearly see a large pair of Fluffy Dice hanging in the centre of the window above the instrument panel. Is this just a USA thing, I guess they only put them up there when they are parked.

I used to take external flights on CO (and other carriers) but it took hours to fix my hair.  Big grin

I saw them once, ages ago on a Delta Shuttle 727- I got Seat 1C, and was able to look into the cockpit, and there was a set of Pink Fuzzy Dice hanging from the #2 Fire Warning Light in the cockpit!

How 'bout this for the yoke:

Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

Might be the pilot's idea of a joke for the next crew. On Embraer aircraft I have heard of plastic tassels and even bicycle bells on the yoke.

GREAT IDEA, just the thing needed when queuing for departure, a bell would show the others who's boss! And it would come in handy for "air rage"  Wink (but would it be rang on the radio for the other a/c to hear!?!) Big grin

'fuzzy dice' were popular in the 1950's - 60's with cars in the USA, usually hung from the inside roof rear view mirror. It is kinda a joke, a little bit of fun. In cars they are actually illegal as are a 'distraction'.

You need the welded steel chain, much more cool than the slip on cover.

Lucky dice - until a Cessna 150 jumps out from behind them! No thanks.

As I understand it, they're put up as a joke for the next crew while the airplane is parked and serviced. If a C150 pops out of the terminal building... we've got bigger problems.

Along the same lines, I have flown with a captain that had one of those small dancing hula girls set on the dash. He isan interesting sort. I mean, when he isn't flying CRJs, he tools around in a MiG-17 atr airshows.  Smile

Was it a 757 flight and were they white with black dots? If they were, I know who the captain was. He is excellent on every level. He does it for a bit of his personality in the cockpit. I laugh every time I go in.

Fair enough - though the photo in reply 9 worries me. Okay, yes, if you're VFR you should be moving your head to see round window frames and the like anyway, but why give the guy who's going to kill you somewhere to hide? A 150'll hide behind a squashed bug till it's too close for comfort. I wouldn't have had those things dangling there when I was flying. Maybe I'm just anal.  Smile

On my last flight out of Ottawa on an AC A320 in June the pilots had a hula doll on the dash as well. It wasn't doing the hula and not sure if he took it down prior to push back because by then the door was closed.

We have a few pilots at Skyway that put things in the windows. One guy throws up a small stuffed animal and another guy hangs a key chain head of Captain Kirk. It's just their way of adding a little fun to their job and making others smile.
Good Luck to all Skyway Pilots! It's been great working with you!

The next time I fly, I'm going to take one of these along. I'm sure it would help with navigating by NDBs.  biggrin

I saw a QX captian pull one of those out of his flight bag and hand it to his new FO, while at the same time telling the FO that he might need this for a few CATIII approaches.

I started cracking up when I saw that!

I've seen the same thing, along with numerous other items on QX flight decks. The joke around here is that when the easy button is on the Q400, its MEL'd. One of my favorites is Christmas lights - there's a Captain that strings those up around the holidays, along with a Santa hat.

Does he hang a stocking on the cockpit door (cabin side)?

At Kalitta, we hang them on the compass of our Falcon 20's. It was a good luck thing, when we brought them out of RFD where they sat upwards of a year before we bought them, the Chief Pilot hung them up for good luck for their flights home to YIP. I like them!
