Wideroe "Coast Hopping"in Finnmark

Wed Jul 18, 2007 2:11 am

I have a little time window in Tromso, which I would like to use for a Coast Hopping trip to Kirkenes. THe flight has 5 stops along the Northern coast. On the way back, another flight with 4 or so stops. I plan to do that flight on 29 July/30 July.

Now here's my question: the flight out of Tromso leaves at 20h45 in the evening, getting into Kirkenes at 23h59. The flight back leaves at 05h49 in the morning, getting into Tromso at 09h30. That is still the period of the midnight sun (more or less)- does that mean I will actually see something out of the window? Or will it be "darkish", in effect meaning I don't see anything of the landscape anymore?

Any other hints for that trip?

Thanks

Hello Mozart,

I was in Tromso last month and experienced the midnight sun. It was very cool! I recommend a trip on the cable car up Mount Storsteinen if you have time. From a quick look at WIkipedia it looks as though you'll just miss the midnight sun by a few days, although it should be light enough to see something out the window.

"The geographical location some 350 km north of the Arctic Circle means that Tromsø has both midnight sun and polar night. The Midnight sun is above the northern horizon from about May 18 to July 26, although the mountains in the north block the view to the Midnight sun a few days, meaning that you can optically see the sun from about May 21 to July 21. Due to the position on top of the globe, the twilight is longer, meaning there is no real darkness between late April and mid August."

I didn't manage any side trips from Tromso on Wideroe but here are a couple photos I took at TOS, sadly not quite a.net quality:

You'll have trouble sleeping, even if you can't see the sun.  bouncy

You would be able to see the landscape witout any problems as it never will become dark. Not sure if it still midnight sun in Tromsø at that time (it is right now), but the sun will only be away for a little while around 2 am so the time you're flying at will be during the "day". For instance in Oslo, which doesn't have the midnight sun and is more than 1000km further south does the sun rise 4:30am and sets 22:30 this time of the year

Thanks for the hints! I've now confirmed my flights. The only fare available for my routing from Svalbard to Kirkenes via Tromso was a fully flexible "business" fare. Not so expensive actually, but I wonder what "business" means in this context. AFAIK neither SAS (doing the LYR-TOS run) nor Wideroe have a business cabin on domestic flights, and also both elements show "food for purchase". Are there any other privileges attached to "business" on domestic flights in Norway?

I think I'll have a nice dinner in Tromso downtown during my 4hour layover before leaving on the WIderoe flight - it seems it is a very animated town with plenty of restaurants and cafes - and then hold out until KKN. Or will I actually get something on board?

Just that you get a flexible ticket and can pre reserve seat all over the plane
