YXX News

Wed Jul 18, 2007 7:02 am

It has been a great month for business at Abbotsford International Airport. On July 9th, Sunwing Airlines announced that they will be offering flights to CUN for the winter season (previously mentioned). You can find more information here:

http://www.abbotsfordairport.ca/AssetFactory.aspx?did=5957

Also, on July 17th, AeroMexico decided to fly an inbound and outbound charter flight from YXX instead of YVR. So far, it was just the one flight. I haven't heard of any details about future plans for AreoMexico at Abbotsford.

Of course, WestJet is still offering regular flights out of Abbotsford to Calgary, Edmonton, and Toronto (the latter has a stopover in YEG). I believe that the PVR charter will be back again, though I haven't heard any confirmation yet.
No matter how random things may appear, there's always a plan.

A major coup for YXX would be sked transborder service. Most likely SEA if it happens.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Great to see continued growth at YXX. To bad AC pulled service to YYC.

Most likely Seattle? On what basis?

YTD YXX's pax numbers are up 15%. That puts them on pace for about 575,000 pax in 2007.

It'll be interesting to see this summer what the effects at YXX will be of not having AC to YYZ and Jazz to YYC and no YYZ nonstops on WS. WS did add the 2 dailies to YEG though, with a 1-stop to YYZ. I think these changes will make the airport's available summer 2007 capacity pretty much flat compared to summer 2006.

Just a guess. SEA is the closest large US city with a hub.

I imagine Fraser Valley residents driving to Bellingham to take advantage of US domestic flights rather than flying through SEA. AC pulled their service due to low loads and lower yields. Even WS isn't pulling sparkling numbers from the anecdotal evidence I hear. It makes sense to operate sched service from YXX due to the hassles of accessing YVR for half a million residents in the area, but somehow many harbour an aversion to YXX. The airport authority isn't helping by investing milllions into an ill-advised central infield terminal. Watch for eventual transpacific cargo service, despite the planned YVR cargo expansion on its north side.
The nice thing about a mistake is the pleasure it gives others.

WS loads seem to be fine. I am actually surprised how well that extra YEG flight is doing. If anything, it seems to me that the loads have improved over the last couple of months.

Quoting YOW (Reply 5):

I think load factors will improve on WS due to AC's pull out. What business AC did have will be going to WS, especially since the AC AVI rules have been changed.

Now it looks like AeroMexico will be chartering two more flights out of YXX. They will be on July 31st and Aug 14th.
