EasyJet: 7 New Routes (Inc Madeira)

Wed Jul 18, 2007 9:02 pm

Some more unexpected U2 route news (following the recently announced addition of BHX to the network):

http://www.easyjet.com/EN/News/new_routes_including_madeira.html

STN-FNC
BRS-FNC
BRS-LIS
LGW-LIS
EDI-KRK
BOH-KRK
LYS-BCN

Presumambly the new routes from STN, BRS, LGW and EDI will all be operated by A319s at those bases?

What about the others? W legs perhaps?
Next flights: LGW-LBA-LGW, LHR-SIN-SYD, SYD-BKK-LHR, LGW-GRO, GRO-CIA, CIA-MAD, MAD-LGW

Excellent news.

I'm delighted about FNC, and the two new routes from BRS.

STN-FNC is another longer sector for U2, will GT reduce its LGW-FNC services?

I'd be surprised... U2 would probably take many of GT's passengers if U2 started LGW to FNC though.

I wish they'd start flying LIS-FNC; now that the PSO regime has been lifted by the Portuguese government, any LCC could make a killing here. Return tickets are now rarely below €200 for a 1h20m flight, with lots of flights operating every day.

Shame there's nothing new from LTN... but I'm sure they would expand if they could... LTN however just doesnt have the capacity at the moment! Would have been nice to see a scheduled LTN-FNC service!

Exactly. This is one route that desperately needs more competition. I would also add Porto- Lisbon route to that list.

Do you think there is any chance that U2 will start to serve any Swedish airport? FR has had big success so I don't see why U2 should fail.

And why not? ZB already successfully competes with U2 (and BA/GT in many cases) on LGW-ALC, LGW-IBZ, LGW-MSV, LGW-AGP, and LGW-FAO so another route will not necessarily mean they would have to pull out if U2 starts services. Besides which ZB has built up a loyal following, having operated under the same name and ownership since the 1960s, and many British ex-pats living abroad or owning second homes in Spain, her islands and Portugal (and their friends and relatives) seem to regard ZB, not BA or U2, as "their" airline. ZB also offer more by way of "frills" than U2 - eg allocated seating, free newspapers, hot food etc.

I also believe that now they operate fewer charter flights, tour operators might take an allocation of seats on ZB's scheduled services.

IIRC NCL-KRK is quite recent, and was launched shortly after the Jet2 announcement of the same route. Besides that, no expansion indeed.

U2 to Madeiara - now that is a bold move on their part! Madeiar is an upmarket and relatively low-key destination which has grown in stature of late as people move away from other, more frequented destinations. The new service from BRS appears to be the most interesting and is a direct stab at the charter airlines at both BRS and CWL - in particular since charters only very recently started from CWL there. Insofar as LGW is concerned ZB appears to be safe as the huge, concentrated market in London and the South East would easily support any expanded services rather than necessarily see a competitor fall out.

U2 and FR have generally not tended to go head-to-head on routes and markets so do not expect any U2 flights to Sweden, which is a strong FR destination.

They often go head-to-head on markets, not so much on direct routes.

BRS-BGY vs BRS-MXP
STN-CIA vs LGW-CIA
MAD-BVA vs MAD-ORY

and many more.

Sweden is that big, that there are plenty of spots for U2 to fly. However, this would be mostly competing with Sterling iso Ryanair. I wouldn't be surprised for a LGW-ARN, for example.

FR already flies to both TFN and FUE; indeed, TFN presently has 3 FR routes and FUE 4. But, yes: there's plenty more opportunities to/from the Canaries, so time will certainly be interesting.

I think U2 flying to FNC is great, but I am not sure about the daily service bit. As most people who have visited Madeira will know unlike most resorts where you arrive at your hotel on a Saturday although it is not uncommon to arrive on a different day, Madeira most hotels and timeshares are usually Monday-Monday - therefore most tourists prefer to fly on a Monday. I think that U2 could be profitable but should leave the daily services to TP.

I know Easyjet have been shown around Lanzarote Airport, there was stories in some
of the Spanish papers last year how easyjet where looking at flying from MAD to TFN/ACE
however so far nothing has come of this.....
Had a friend that works at the airport ask around about a month ago, and she kept getting
'no comment' so make of that what you will...
from the Island with sun and great photo's.. Why not visit Lanzarote

FNC is excellent news. If anybody hasn't flown into there before I would highly recommend it. Its not as much fun as it used to be when they had a short runway but still pretty exciting and there are some great places to take photos of planes from if that kind of thing floats your boat. Even if you are not interested in airplanes, Madeira is a great island to spend a few days.

If you look at Paphos (PFO), the "British days" used to only be Sundays and Wednesdays - it was virtually impossible to get a flight from the UK to PFO on any other day. Then BA/GT moved in with daily (and now sometimes even two or three daily) flights and the UK to PFO market has exploded.

So there's no reason why a daily service to FNC can't work - watch out for many more UK tourists in Madeira!
