CX Launches 2nd Daily SFO Flight

Fri Jul 20, 2007 10:23 am

Starting Oct 18, 2007 Cathay Pacific will double it's San Francisco operations. Schedules already uploaded on www.cathaypacific.com. All flights will be utilizing the 744s.

CX870 HKG-SFO Daily 1410/1135 744 (New Flight)
CX872 HKG-SFO Daily 1625/1350 744

CX873 SFO-HKG Daily 0120/0625+1 744
CX879 SFO-HKG Daily 1335/1840+1 744 (New Flight)

Flights will also continue into the winter schedule:
CX870 HKG-SFO Daily 1410/1005 744 (New Flight)
CX872 HKG-SFO Daily 1630/1225 744

CX873 SFO-HKG Daily 0010/0655+1 744
CX879 SFO-HKG Daily 1205/1855+1 744 (New Flight)

Boy do I love the timing of CX879 as it will fly mostly in daylight and arrives HKG just at the perfect time to enjoy an evening dinner and/or party at a night club.

Thanks for the update. I was sure they were going to put a 773 on this route. But 744 are great also.

I was hoping to see their B773ER @ SFO also as we already see a CX B744.. hissyfit ....

...load factors for CX on this route has been exceptional (doesn't mean its a profitable flight, however prices on this route aren't cheap either..even with SQ and UA competition so yields are probably very good) so I'm not surprised to see them add another flight..but another B744.. Wow!

I guess they are forcasting high demands that would justify having 2 daily 744s. Also putting the 744 will help reduce the chances for unscheduled technical stops during winter when the headwinds across the pacific for the westbound flights are fierce.

Still have not seen the proposed new JFK nonstop on the schedule yet.

BTW is the photo on the previous reply the "real un-edited image"? That giant CX 744 and tiny UA seems to be flying dangerously too close to each other.  Wow! But great focus for whomever caught that shot.

Yes, it is unedited; if you go to other SFO photos on the photo search engine, you'll see quite a few like this; Runways 28L/R are very close and often, landings are performed on both runways. I remember seeing a superb photo of a Lufthansa 744 and a smaller aircraft, in much the same pose as you see in this photo.

Be patient. By 2012 every one of Cathay's North America flights will be flown by the 777-300ER (Current plan anyway - there are rumours of more A346s!)

Good news 2x/daily from SFO....always room for more HKG flights. Just wish other wannabe real international carriers realized the demand. It's always mind boggling how CX & SQ can come in and virtually dominate both the LAX/SFO markets with multiple flights from each city, yet the US carriers, with the exception of UA, can't begin to compete.
Also better fare deals on CX.

Air India want to fly HKG-SFO, but the air services agreement does not allow it yet. The reason it does not allow it yet is because Air India do not have the spare capacity to fly the route and do not want a new air services agreement to be signed until they have the capacity to fly the route, much to the annoyance of Cathay which desperately wants more capacity to India.

AI starts service to SFO nonstop from Bangalore at the end of 2007 or the beginning of 2008.

I can't wait for that. It would be cool to see AI on SFO-HKG too.

Where would the stop be? AI's new 772LR could definitely do this high-tech route.

I find it interesting that CX is increasing their capacity to SFO... I suppose UA is hurting bad enough for international aircraft that they can't compete too hard. Then again, UA has started to throw their 777s in for hong kong routes, which gives them a bit more flexibility.

ultimately though, it's good to see this route is doing well and the added capacity certainly won't hurt prices for the consumer!

Also, I have it on good authority that the YVR service, that has three flights (one seasonal, two year round) will go to three year round come the fall. This plus the SFO added flight means a significant increase in capacity for CX in the NW USA and BC. Not sure about what a/c will be the third trip; it may be an A343. No A346s are planned.

Oasis' plan was to fly to OAK, but latest rumors circulating is that they plan to go to SFO instead and may commence service as early as this winter. If that is indeed true, SFO-HKG will be a very crowded market route and we can potentially see 35 weekly 744 flights before the year is over offered by four competitors (CX, SQ, UA, 08). Nonetheless great for consumer options and let the pricing war begin.

CX earlier released it's PR regarding the new flight: http://www.cathaypacific.com/cpa/en_...667f2e3110VgnVCM32000011d21c39____

I am glad to see that CX scheduled the new service as a daytime flight. When I flew to HKG last year, I flew from ACV down to LAX so I could catch CX 885 which leaves in the early afternoon. I did the same thing when I took the daylight QF flight to SYD several years ago. I would have preferred to fly out of SFO but have a strong dislike for 14 hour long red eyes. I can't sleep on planes; don't want to take drugs only to sleep upright in a Y class seat; and don't like the idea of arriving early in the morning (2 days later) only to spend the entire day fighting my desire to go to bed. At that point, you have lost 3 days of your vacation including recovery time from the long flight. CX 885 worked perfectly. We left LAX in the afternoon, followed the sun across the Pacific and arrived in HKG right after sunset.... around 7pm the next day (14 hours 19 minutes later). I took the train into the city and stayed at a hotel near Central then caught a morning flight the rest of the way to BKK and USM... rested and raring to go. I definitely want to go back to Asia in the next year or so and I'll most likely take this new CX flight out of SFO. I love flying on CX. Their Y Class inflight service is far superior to anything I have experienced on a US carrier.
I'm leavin on a jet plane. Don't know when I'll be back again....

Exactly. Though CX posted a net profit still in 2003. Also in 2001 after 9.11

And good to see that CX is doing very well again. But it seems that the net profit is not as high as before. Maybe due to massive expansion?

Mmm, could be... A lot of business sacrifice profit for expansion based on the hope of a higher overall profit in the future. But some go too far. Lets hope CX doesn't. ( Although I don't think they will.)

This will be the perfect time to start when it comes to gate space. The last 3 International gates A1,3,5 should be opening in Oct. But I wonder where CX will be parking this a/c during the day. Since QF seems to get the remote spot, CX could be towing to the American hangar each day. With VA starting operations, gate space will be a premium now come October.

If it's true, that's too bad for OAK. I was looking forward to seeing fresh international service to OAK. But for five international carriers to start SFO service is great for the entire area!

I wonder if others include Emirates and Vietnam???

I guess I wasn't aware that VN had picked LAX first. When VN announced their intentions to fly to the US after the trade embargo had lifted, it had been mentioned that SFO would be their first US gateway. Either way, I'm sure VN will serve SFO eventually.

Maybe Vladavia will extend their rights to fly to SFO or LAX beyond their authority to fly to ANC and SEA with TU-204's. Wouldn't that be a sight!!

Anyway, how do you like being back in the Bay Area?

While this may indeed be a profitable route, I just can not understand why they have not launched a HKG/ORD flight. The number of city combinations that could go to one stop service via One World would go up significantly. The addition of the KA route structure opens up 20+ China cities to two stop service from almost all of AA's ORD serviced destinations. I am certain that their RR powered 744s could do the route that UA has all to themselves with their PW 744s. Could there be some AA interference here? Not welcoming CX to codeshare/run this route.

I am safe betting this one to be Kingfisher and Oasis Hong Kong

So in the end the 5 new airlines would be:

Aer Lingus(330)
Air India(777)
Jet Airways(773)
Kingfisher(345)
Virgin Blue(773)

However I am still pondering the entrance of :

British Midland(333)
Emirates(345)
Oasis(744)
SAS(333)

Jet Airways likely in 2008

From this article on 8 Jul with Jet Airways chief Naresh Goyal:
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/I...ndia_Goyal/articleshow/2187066.cms

"Within a period of one year, the premier private carrier hoped to increase the frequency that will include the Chennai-Los Angeles sector and a Mumbai-San Fransisco flight via China. "Washington DC is also on my radar" Goyal said. "We would like to see Indian carriers' market share come to be 50%. To do that we don't have to be joining alliances."

SFO going from zero Indian carriers to three? Interesting notion. My spy at BNA who works for DL says AM, but then they claim to be wanting to fly everywhere. Oasis would also be intersting, given CX's additional flight and the added 3x weekly UA 777 (seasonal or permanent?). That would make HKG a very busy market indeed. There was lots of talk about Emirates last year, but other than IAH, I've heard no other mention of US expansion by them. Nice to see SFO getting lots of new service, regardless.

Until Oasis HK makes an announcement, I still hold out hope for them to serve OAK over SFO. This service would raise the "status" of OAK as being an international airport...the last of the Bay Area airports to have service to Asia.

I'll agree with you some what. FedEx (although cargo) has numerous flights from Asia.

Over the years, OAK has gotten some pretty interesting players.

The ones I can recall:

-Martinair
-CityBird
-TAESA
-Corsair
-SATA

These are carriers SFO/SJC/SMF will never receive and are/were pretty exotic (in my opinion).

I think this one will be a "hit"..of course, I'm just guessing.

With AI it's always hit and miss

My statement was not about the potential of the route, just about AI's ability (or not) to sustain a proper service without innumerable cancellations, delays and a/c going tech Sad

Actually, I do beleive Oasis plan all along has been to operate into OAK. ATW Online this morning confirms that, along with their interest in Chicago.

I can confirm Oasis' winter schedule lists KSFO, NOT KOAK.

Any idea why they opted for SFO instead of OAK which was their original stated intent? This obviously contradicts what ATW said just this morning. Personally I never though OAK to be a good idea, but...

Maybe to compete head to head with the big boys of CX, UA, SQ? Who knows but sure makes more sense.

Darn! I was hoping for OAK. I remember back in the 80's when OAK was campaigning for Korean Air.
