did actually used to be called "London Manston" despite it's distance. I think it's trouble is it's stuck out in the middle of nowhere with no decent road or rail links to be a viable business. EUJet tried and failed, although recently some charters have been operating. Monarch were supposed to be operating a widebody to Norfolk, Virginia IIRC but it fell through due to lack of interest.
I believe that there is quite a NIMBY oposition to expansion as the town of Ramsgate is right at one end of the runway:
It's a bit like the not too far away Lydd (London Ashford) Airport which was having it's runway extended for 737 operations, but nothing seems to have come of this either and last I heard they were making a round of redundancies.
While it would be nice to see services revived at MSE
I can't help but think it's not going to happen. Freight operations seem to be going from strength to strength however.
