Airtran 737s At MDW

Everytime I connect through Midway I only see the venerable 717s, does Airtran operate their 737s at all out of MDW?

I've done 1 trip on a 737 into MDW last year, and my partner swore it was MX sub, so I'm not sure. IIRC, seems like there was a FLL-ATL-MDW leg ran in the past on a 737. Most of the time, I see 717's at MDW.
Ah, Summer, Fenway Park, Boston Red Sox and Beer.....

Well, being based at MDW I see their 737's all of the time! Yes, they do use them regularly into MDW.

How is Airtrans doing out of MDW? Has it been pretty much the same since they didn't get the extra gates (which went to WN)?

MDW-ATL is also a big 737 route for AirTran.

Yes, we fly 737's into MDW all time. Maybe even more than 717's. And Amtrakguy.......it's Airtran, not Airtrans. Thanks

Haha I don't think I've ever heard the 717 referred to as "venerable" considering its a 10 year old airplane!

Every MDW route, with the exception of MDW-CLT, sees daily scheduled 73G service.

The current lineup for July:
ATL 1x 73G, 7x 717
MSP 1x73G, 3x 717
BOS 3x 73G
MIA 1x 73G
SRQ 1x 73G
CLT 2x 717
MCO 2x 717, 1x 73G

While I don't have exact figures, I can guarantee the MDW-MSP LF has increased since the route launched in 2005. It went from 3x 717 that were rarely filled to, as recently as last month, 1x 73G 5x 717 that are frequently oversold all day long. The pulldown this month has sealed the deal - the 717s are always full and the 737 is too most days of the week. It's not all $19 web tickets anymore, either. It was nice to see AirTran stick with a route long enough for it to mature and have it pay off.

Why the pull down then? Just seasonal?
Are MDW-CLT and BOS maturing the same way MDW-MSP did?

I don't think either one has quite the upside of MDW-MSP, so I wouldn't be surprised if they don't see similar upgrades. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, there's not as much potential for market stimulation on longer routes because driving (and Amtrak, in the case of MSP) isn't really a viable alternative. There are plenty of people in Chicago who drive up to the Twin Cities; that's not so true for BOS or CLT.

Furthermore, MDW-CLT seems generally to be an underperforming route. US (YV actually) didn't last long on the route with a massive hub at the other end, and by all accounts, it wasn't one of the brighter spots on TZ's route map. Loads (and yields) were fantastic for a couple of weeks in May and October and not so hot the rest of the time. FL benefits from better-sized aircraft for the route, but there's no reason it would print money for them if it didn't for TZ. I don't have as much insight on BOS, though FL undoubtedly benefits from the fact that B6 isn't flying BOS-ORD. Still, the route ties up an aircraft for half the day, and FL doesn't seem too keen on expansion at MDW (though they've cut back some, so they do have the gate space for 5-7 more flights easily).

Only 22 flights these days? I was fueling for them at MDW a year ago and I remember 40+ (quite a feat with only 4 gates!). Looks like they've changed around their MDW-ATL flights quite a bit... I nonrev on that route a lot (work for Southwest now) and I remember it being all 73's cept for 1 717 flight.

40+? Even with the 3XDFW and 3XEWR, I don't think we've ever hit 40 departures a day from MDW.

I think our highest was 38 flights when we were operating DFW and EWR, and still in the low to mid 30s last winter with RSW, PBI, and extra SRQ and MCO frequencies. The pulldown to 22 just happened this month, and it looks like they just have a finite amount crews and airplanes that they are using to focus on longer-haul routes like SAN and LAS and the increased presence at BWI. Right now it still appears that MDW may get the seasonal flights back in Nov or Dec, but we're still waiting to see what happens at that little airport just up 94.

Ah yes, that's the problem with simple text. It's all but impossible to impart sarcasm. Haha. I was wondering how many people would pick up on that. Actually the most realistic descriptor for the 717 would probably be "bastard-daughter-of-Boeing"...

It seems to me that a majority of the 737 seem to be going to BOS and MCO. I was trying to get a flight last week tuesday and all of the flights were the 717 from MDW-ATL and Full.

I've heard (just anecdotally, but you may have numbers) that the FL gets a good handful of CLT-MDW-MSP passengers as well. Certainly not something that makes or breaks either route alone, but at the same time definitely not a negative.
