FedEx: New European Regional Hub In CGN?

Mon Jul 23, 2007 1:47 pm

A German aviation periodical (FlugRevue) reports that FedEx has inked a deal with the CGN airport authority to build a new 500,000 sq ft sorting facility in the footprint of a defunct passenger terminal, which is slated for demolition. The opening is planned for 2010, (literally) just a stone's throw from Big Brown's European hub operation. I haven't come across an official announcement from FedEx yet, but given that CGN already appeared on their radar screen last year, when they launched a nonstop service between CGN and MEM, it's not entirely implausible. Growth opportunities in CDG and FRA are fairly limited by slot restrictions. Besides, DHL plans to consolidate the current BRU and CGN operations at a new facility in Leipzig by the end of this year This would open a window of opportunity for a newcomer in CGN.
Can anyone here confirm this report?

CGN is one of the few German airports without a night curfew. It is directly connected to the main Autobahn network, a main railway freight yard is just a few kilometers away and lies smack in the middle of the most populated area in Europe (North-Eastern France, Belgium, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, the German Rhine zone incl. the Ruhr area, the Rhine-Main zone etc. are within 4 hours drive by truck).
It has a very long runway (almost 4 kilometers, it is actually an emergency runway for the Space Shuttle) and not much passenger operation (since the German capital was moved from nearby Bonn to Berlin).

well, the passenger total will exceed 10 million this year, CGN has emerged as a busy LCC airport, besides the cargo traffic they have since many years, even before UPS located their hub there.

If that becomes reality, and the chances are very high, it has to do with teh oingoing problems here at FRA, where the new runway for landings is tied to irresponsible conditions like a complete night curfew. The negotiations on the dialogie forum may come to the conclusion, that a conditional night curfew will materialize, meaning that LH moste likely can retain their absoluteley necessary night freighter operations, without which the transit between freight and pax cargo would not be possible.

That leaves other carriers out in the rain, even if FX might retain one or two night slots as well, they would have no grandfather rights for potential growth. CGN however offers that growth and since CGN is 1 1/2 - 2 hours by van on the A3 and - it has been mentioned before, smack in the middle of the biggest catchment area on the continent, it is the logical choice for relocating these flights.

FX simply takes the void left by DHL. Bad for FRA, but that is the colateral damage done by the NIMBYs.

I understand (from other forums) that FedEx are planning a 5 x weekly MEM-MAN MD11F flight.

The CGN Airport Authority is currently planning and building a new Air Cargo and Trucking Center close to the threshold of RWY 14R in order to allow the express services an unhindered expansion in the central cargo area.

That is not the real reason. The main reason is that the present area is considered "critical" and all visitors are subject to the painstaking searches since February last year, which is a real pain in the ..s for everyone. The new buildings are outside taht zone in a general services area, like the cargo terminal in Frankfurt.

There are already many flights of FedEx to CGN.

Again, in the first half year, the cargo result in CGN has increased around 6 %.

With new cargo facilities and after DHL leaves CGN, FX can find much capacities for a new hub. I would love to see more of them here.

And I love to see the daily approach of (among others) all these MD11s of LH, UPS, and FX every evening over Cologne on my way from my job. I'm glad that I've still the chance to see so much 3-holers.
