Must All Pax In Party Know Destination?

Mon Jul 23, 2007 11:15 pm

A CSA agent helped me do something really awesome a few years ago...but I'm wondering if technically it may have been against the rules?

When my wife and I were dating, I took her on a surprise trip IND-STL-SFO on TW. I didn't tell her where we were going, just that we were flying "somewhere". When we got to the desk to check in, she stood back and I explained this to the agent. He started the checkin with her still standing a fair distance away, then printed out the bag tags, placed them face-down on the counter, and then beckoned her over to check her ID and ask her the standard security questions. Then she stepped back to where she was waiting, and he did the rest of whatever he needed to do, with her still in the dark as to where we were going.

I was really, really grateful that he "played along". But I'm wondering if that broke any rules of any sort?

And, for what it's worth, the trip was a lot of fun. It was obvious that, being TW, our first leg was to STL...I initially told my wife that STL was our destination, and that we were going to visit my mother there. But of course she saw right through that. Unfortunately, the surprise was ruined in the IND waiting area when my phone rang and my wife heard me say "Hello?....Fine, you?....at the airport....San Franci-oh, sh*t!" But when I revealed it, she did this little gasp/jump thing that was really cute.

I can't imagine what if any they would have been -- as long as it was clear she wasn't being hidnapped or anything (hands ductaped, gun to the head, etc). Heck, there have been plenty of times when I've checked in as a party of 1 where the agent didn't even confirm my destination. I thought _that_ was a little funky.

A rule requiring people to know their destinations would make it difficult to fly with babies & young children. It would also make it difficult to travel with a severely mentally disabled person.

It'd be kind of tough to keep the secret after you get to the gate area & board the aircraft without a blindfold and earplugs. Those might be problematic.  Smile
