Two Canadair CL-215 Crash In Europe Within 24h

Tue Jul 24, 2007 8:25 pm

As we in Southern Europe bake in temperatures that have exceed 40'C over the past week or so, forest fires have been raging across the region.

Five people lost their lives in the past 24 hours trying to extinguish the hundreds of thousand of hectares of forest going up in smoke - two in Greece and three in Italy, following the crash of two water-bombers - Canadair CL-215 aircraft.

May they rest in peace  pray

Hundreds of forest fires have been reported in Greece, where two pilots died on Monday after a water-bombing aircraft they were flying over a forest fire crashed.

Another such aircraft flying over a forest fire in Italy crashed on Monday, killing three people.

The 215s are really starting to be a bit old. They should seriously consider upgrading to 415s, or replacing the engines with Turboprops instead of Piston.

That said, the missions that they are flying are exceedingly dangerous - possibly even more than for fighter jet pilots.

The pilots that fly Canadair are nothing short of modern heroes. Often, they are the last resort for people on the ground.

Sadly, I have experienced several forest fires in my life and when you have 20m flames in front of you, that your throat hurts, your eyes water, your skin feels so hot and you seem to be in the middle of hell, a drop from a Canadair comes as a Godsend.

Much respect to water bomber pilots.

They actually could have been the 415 series, my mistake...
