Was definitely not expecting this. Is this the only Ponce service from SoFl?

It looks like utilization flying but there is no other service (cue NK adding PSE in 3....2....1...t) between South Florida and PSE.

No huge surprise here, outside of possibly the timing, as I would have expected some other new routes first. The bigger surprise was that Aguadilla and San Juan have not been announced yet, but I guess they are holding off on that with NK and AA in those markets.

Once again, more FLL expansion from Barger. Neeleman was very stubborn about expanding at FLL because he did not get along at all with FLL officials. Barger is very adament about expanding FLL heavily, and I predict FLL will probably be up to two dozen non-stop destinations within eighteen months pending gatespace. Neeleman's problem was that he wasn't very flexible about where that gate space was. jetBlue is now taking more gate space in T1's B gates.

This flight in particular is just a good example of using an A320 that would otherwise be parked overnight at FLL. The times have prooved popular for Orlando and New York City, and will do just fine here. In addition, it should be noted that not only will FLL-PSE operate year-round, but that Orlando-Ponce will operate year-round as well, not ending in September like planned.

I still am baffled as to why AA ignores Ponce and Aguadilla.

B6 isn't able to supply passengers with their live tv product on this route? If it isn't what other types of IFE do they offer? And finally why Ponce?

Fox InFlight service is free on all flights to Bermuda, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico.

And finally why Ponce?

It is not served non-stop from South Florida, whereareas there are more than a dozen daily flights to San Juan and two daily flights to Aguadilla.

I've wondered the same, but now that B6 and NK are in the respective markets, they have a pretty good reason not to jump in now.

Strange they would start PSE before SJU or BQN, but I guess it compliments access to PR a lot more now that the other 2 airports are already covered by AA and NK.

With this flight included, B6 flights on the ground will be as follows:

3:25am-4:35am
3:38am-5:30am
2:05am-3:00am

Talk about excellent use of ground crew, not to mention aircraft utilization! The flight is timed to depart right in between the JFK and MCO departures - a time that a full ground crew would have been available anyway. Very smart move, IMO.

Though Spirit and jetBlue are not flying to Miami, offering a large O&D market and a significant amount of connections throughout the US, to boot. Despite B6 and NK's pressence in BQN and PSE, tickets still aren't cheap.

True, but Puerto Rico flights are famously local, and given the general plague effect that NK and B6 have on fares, AA couldn't possibly sustain the route on connections.

No, they couldn't, but given that they aren't competing for many of the connections, that passengers do pay a premium to travel to Miami, and that jetBlue and Spirit still don't offer super cheap fares to BQN and PSE, I think AA could profitably fill a daily 738 on MIA-BQN and MIA-PSE. Continental competes effectively to New York City, and AA, IMO, can compete effectively to Florida.

AA no dbout has bigger fish to fry right now than PSE and BQN, though I believe they will return to at least Aguadilla by 2010.

I'm glad to hear B^ doing FLL-PSE. The service was needed. Pretty sure it'll be mostly VFR traffic. But at least the PSE serves all of southeastern/southern/southwest and even western Puerto Rico, and BQN serves the western/northwestern/and north central part of the island. There is alot of traffic that was being previuosly ignored.
I, too, wondered why AA didn't bother serving PSE or BQN or both knowing that CO and B6 have been there a while now and look like they are there to stay...no to mention NK's new svc to BQN.

Are we expecting to hear any new city announcements this year? Looking at the RouteMap, I would think FNT would be a good idea for like 3x to JFK and maybe one to FLL?

Just a thought

No new cities planned this year, straight from Barger.

On the note of Puerto Rico-Florida service, does anyone think that PR-TPA flights would work out well for B6?

1.) Aircraft utilization - it's back at MCO on time for a morning departure to the Northeast.
2.) Culture - those who travel outside of the US tend to be more accustomed to extreme early morning departures such as this one; in fact, most prefer it.

i think they should hold off on anything to/from JFK until T5 opens. the place is already handling too much traffic for its facilities (even with the trailer park), and delays are constant in the late afternoon hours as it is alongside other airline congestion. the terminal is already running at what it could handle and then some (although there is a lull between 1100-1230 where there's only 2 departures (BUR and LGB, an opportune time to add a few flights there). not a bad idea, but maybe in next year when there's more gate space.

well, I think Barger understands that B6 needs to connect the dots a bit before it starts announcing new destinations. Places like CLT, RDU, BNA all should be connected to JFK, BOS, IAD, FLL, MCO before they start announcing even more cities. Look at WN. Its taken them 35+years to get to 64 destinations, vs B6''s 7. Slow and steady wins out over wild fire. I think you'll see a lot more new routes centered on IAD, FLL, BOS, MCO, and SLC, all cities which could support Blue's expansion.

I think it won't be long before you see FLL-SJU. Blue just needs some time to get its ducks in order.

I'm very anti gaining more cities or frequency of routes we have already but thats only out of JFK. I"m relieved to see FLL-PONCE. This will help to relieve alittle bit of stress on our operation at night as for those have flown at night out of JFK it is pretty busy.

Understatement of the year lol. I flew out this past Thursday (bad delays all over NYC), and it was tough to find anywhere to sit. Many started sitting on the floor, and boarding lines in the rotunda spilled over several gates. Definitely no more expansion until the new terminal is finished.

In addition to PSE, BUF and SYR, what other routes out of FLL can we expect?

No. There is adequate service from TPA to SJU (x2 Daily AA 757, 5 times a week NK 319 [NK flight due to discontinue August 12- only seasonal during summer]. BQN and PSE would not be sustainable, as MCO and South Florida have the larger PR ethnic base. The flights from the Tampa Bay area has never been able to sustain 2 or 3 carriers in the long-term (i.e. KP out of TPA, and TZ out of PIE back in the mid/late 90's).

I know they want it up and running in 2008, but I've heard like January/February by some and spring by others. I'm curious to see what the plan is as far as opening it and transitioning out of the trailer gates and opening the gates its blocking. I read a post here a week ago somewhere mentioning the trailer is being relocated to the front of T6 and will continue to operate in addition to the 26 gates at T5, while T6 is renovated. I haven't heard that from anyone at JB, but it would make sense, especially since it would give 33 gates to work with.

Would they ever consider going out on a limb and open a FLL-SEA route. The only flight that is offered to any part of the country over there is basically a AS departure out of MIA. This may be extreme but it could be a nice little niche for them to open the corners of the country like that. Especially during the summer cruise months.

True, nevermind that then. Still, it isn't going to happen. jetBlue's A320s have enough performance issues on shorter routes from JFK and BOS to California, tech stops aren't that uncommon (though the situation has gotten a lot better recently, thanks to improvements like recduced seating capacity). Range isn't standard across the board of the A320 family and varies based on many factors. FLL-SEA just isn't viable on an A320 when you add in many factors, such as all that cruise luggage.

You underestimate the power of the Maine winter, and it's ability to encourage people to migrate to warmer climates...
In the winter to spring, PWM and MHT become flooded with Florida bound leisure travelers. Being leisure travelers, they go for the lowest priced seats (exactly what AirTran and JetBlue can provide) A single non stop is no problem for PWM to fill, I wouldn't be surprised if even more came in the near future. (I mean, look at MHT just down the road...WN is filling something like 6 daily 737s to Florida now)

Has anyone heard a rough figure for the number of FLL and/or MCO flights JetBlue will be adding for this winter (and maybe a time frame?)
I reject your reality and substitute my own...

The departure will only be 0250 for three days. With daylight savings over, it becomes 0350 on 4 November.

This is a Latin market. I don't understand why everytime an airline (usually jetBlue or Spirit) announced these very odd departure times from a Latin/Caribbean market, people are up in arms saying "it won't work! it won't work!", when the reaity is, in Latin America, these times do work.

Why? In reality it does work, you may want to check out their JFK-SDQ flights (3:42 AM arrival) and JFK-STI (3:34 AM arrival). These flights are relatively popular with the Dominican community in NYC (mainly Washington Heights).

Quoting DL Widget Head (Reply 41):
Your sledgehammer point is noted however, mark my words, six months from now the service will either be discontinued or the departure changed to something more viable.

Are you talking about NK or JetBlue here?

While I don't know much about NK, I can say with confidence that JetBlue does exceedingly well on its late-night red-eyes between JFK-STI/SDQ/BQN/SJU/PSE and MCO-SJU/BQN/PSE.

And most of those flights have been around for years - much more than six months.
