The must be common on the IL-96.  Smile
When I flew to Moscow last year on an Aeroflot IL-96, the passengers clapped and cheered very loud like on this plane. It was a long 10.5 hour turbulent flight with people drunk on vodka.

Try Cubana.
I've flown them but on an IL-62.
The flight was too short to get drunk on rum. However if I get a long flight on Cubana IL-96 to Havana, I am sure I'll be one of the drunk clappers in a festive mood.

Quoting RussianJet (Reply 6):
ever been to Cuba?

I have. I sounded a lot like those on the plane landing just about every night.

The IL-96 is about the same loudness of a 777.

Man, that sounded like a live studio audience... I wonder where the plane was landing? They sounded all gitty before touchdown, so I agree with LH526; they probably were filled with rum!  Wink I remember when an El Al plane almost got hit with a missile over South Africa landed safely at Ben Gurion they were all clapping and singing the Israeli national anthem. However that was more of a sobering moment than this video.

I dont see what is so funny or what the big deal is. There clapping, end of story. Maybe they are on vacation, maybe they had a rough flight due to weather and there happy to be on the ground. Point is, who gives a sh*t. Let them clap all they want.

Hey guys.....When I flew LOT Polish Airlines over to Warsaw in 2003.... and back to/from Chicgao, on both landings the passenegrs clapped... I asked my Polish friend why they did this and it is to pay respect and appreciaiton for the flight crew for getting them safely to their destination.....So for those of you that think its funny or dorky or even obnoxious, think again..its just a show of appreciation and respect... I was flying into ACV during a hellacious storm one time on a EMB-120, winds about turned the plane over, and it looked like we were going to go in the ocean. We didn't, and at the end of the flight, everyone stood up and clapped. It was one time I didn't mind it.

I love it when people clap after I land the aircraft. Just feels good plain and simple. Better then having nagging people all day complaining that the coffee is too hot in the back.

That cheering reminded me of Nov.2003,when I came home on 15 day R&R while serving a yearlong tour in Iraq. The ATA
L-10-11 landed at BWI,and seconds after touchdown, the pilot announced,"Welcome back to the United States"! It sounded as if all of us 200 troops on the flight cheered, what an exciting moment!

I've definitely found that there is less clapping on American flights than on European flights. I don't think clapping is annoying, but for me as an American it's a very rare thing.

I only clap and cheer if we bounce a couple times while landing, hit a downburst, or have to do a go-around. Unfortunately, it's often drowned out by the shrieks and gasps of idiots who think we're crashing.  Sad

I hear very little clapping in Europe, i recall hearing some on flights to portugal from time to time, or maybe more on eastern europe flights.

Then again, I just came back from Russia, and on a SU flight between LED and SVO, people did not clap upon landing, and on the LX flight from DME to GVA (packed with mostly russian pax), people clapped... But it was a very shaky flight and I guess that's what happens most of the time with bad weather flights. Turbulence = anxious people = happy to get to the airport  Wink

I have found that people tend to clap more on a long haul flight, although I think there was alot of clapping at KIX when I went in April because you could feel a strong crosswind when we landed. And they always clap when landing at FNC, it is quite a tricky approach as those who have been there willl know.

Thats it?

You should have seen what went on in the 1980's when Avianca would operate "Lechero" (Milk-Run) flights with 707's on routings like JFK-BAQ-BOG-MDE......By the time you got to the last stop, people were shouting, yes SHOUTING, and singing and whistling and clapping with uncontrolled joy (or was it relief?)

Those were the days......

Actually, when I lived in Puerto Rico, it was common for passengers to clap when the plane landed, wether it was landing in Puerto Rico or a flight from Puerto Rico landing at it's destination. I never minded it, I thought it was pretty funny. Heck, I clapped myself more than once!

I was on a Southwest flight on which people clapped when we landed in FLL on a flight from TPA. We encountered some thunderstorms over the Everglades that gave us a very rough ride. I think people were just glad to get on the ground after such a rough flight.

Cheers, Ralph

I've had the same experience every time I've flown into Santo Domingo. I don't see anything wrong with clapping when a plane arrives at it's destination. I see it as a way to celebrate "We're here! Woo Hoo!"  smile

I think the homeland of landing-clappers are PMI-bound flights with a high share of retirees, families and drunk skittles club members. LT A330s on DUS-PMI are an epitome of it. There are seldom clappers on business flights such as FRA-HAM. One day there was one and people started staring at him suspiciously  Wink

I remember once arriving in FLL, the flt attendant during the arrival speech, she ended with a "Thanks for flying Delta, a PROUDLY american air carrier" or something like that. We were already on the ground, but people just wouldn´t stop clapping. In this case it was ok, I personally think patriotism is a very nice thing.  Wink

I flew on a Japan Airlines domestic flight MD-87 and the passengers were clapping after landing. Since the japanese people are very private, I do not think they do this much, but our flight was full of drunken sailors and airmens after a great night in Roponggi.

Half of the plane were americans.

True , id feel totally safe on a IL-96. Its more the airlines Id be concerned about and the airlines maintanance standards.

The only time ive clapped is when in an emergency and we landed safe. BWIA engine failure on the Tristar /
Air China 744 (we never got told the problem ) but had to dump fuel and make emergency landing / Sri Lankan A340 double wheel blow out on take off!!! I think that warrented clapping.

I noticed on alot of LH flights that the German students do this alot.

Most people clapping are inexperienced flyers. When you go on holiday with a charter airline in Europe, you'll always hear them clap (even when returning). I once came back from Spain on a very calm flight, and after our midnight touchdown all of the folks went wild clapping. After we had left the runway the captain comes on and informs us that "you have just experienced a fully automated landing". I thought it was priceless Big grin

You don't clap for your taxi driver when he drops you of neither, do you?

Any pilots want to give us their opinion on hearing the crowd clapping after touchdown?
