Airports With No Narrow Body Service.

Wed Jul 25, 2007 5:33 am

I can think of tons of airports that have no wide bodies....but are there any airports that have no narrowbodies...only heavies??? (widebody)

That list would be zero, of course. The list of airports where widebody movements outnumber narrowbody movements could probably be counted on one hand. NRT, perhaps. LHR? SIN? DXB? Any others?

NRT could be, and DXB highly likely too... SIN? could be.. LHR? Well, maybe in terms of pax, but in terms of aircraft I don't know... from the good old days there are still many, many narrowbody flights on grandfather rights into LHR... from Scandinavia for instance you have I think 22-25 daily narrowbody flights into LHR on SK alone.. adding BA's 15 or so and it suddenly adds up.. and Scandinavia is pretty small compared to the rest of LHR's market.. But would be interesting to see what the actual facts are for LHR on narrows vs widebodies..!

There probably are a few airports that see only widebodies, I'm guessing some of those that only see cargo services.

HND is another that sees more widebody than narrowbody traffic

What about remote locations, like islands in the middle of oceans that would be out of range of any narrowbodies? Do any such routes exist?

your best bet would be DXB as it sees a lot of big movements and little domestic routes

Possibly Midway Atoll (PMDY) although not scheduled service... Really only sees medical/technical emergencies

No. Hawaii is probably as remote as they come and IIRC it does receive 757 service. Remember that it's not total distance but availability of diversion airports that defines "remote".

Aloha flies 737-700's to the mainland. Plus a lot more inter island stuff.

Continental Micronesia flies B738's to Narita, Kansai and Nagoya, along with Hong Kong and Manila.

They also fly B738's to PHNL via several islands in Micronesia and the Marshall Islands.

And of course the majority of within the state of Hawaii is B717, B737 and CRJ.

I'd suspect that anywhere there was an airport remote enough to have mostly widebody overseas service, there would be local traffic of smaller aircraft. Some might not have local jets - VRMM - Male for example.

But they'd have some prop aircraft flying.

AF 747s and a whole horde of turboprops.

B767's also

You've just found the possible airport

IPC / SCIP - Mataveri Intl on Easter Island - LAN B763 is the only scheduled service

How about MLE? (Male/Maldives) Seaplanes don't land on the runway so I'm not counting them.

Worked Hard. Flew Right. Farewell, Continental. Thanks for the memories.

I believe there are still Dash-8 and Do-228 aircraft flying to some of the other island airports in Male.

Also there were a couple airlines with A320 service to that airport - IC, QR, UL

I think that's the winner. One airline, only widebody, no turboprop. (as there's no "adjacent island").

Iran Asseman (sp?), Shaheen, Kuwait, Qatar all come to mind for narrowbody operations to DXB. Air Arabia too? I'm not sure.

Count out SIN as well. They have Silk Air and Tiger both using A320 family. Not sure if Jetstar or Air Asia fly there. Undoubtedly lots of widebodies, but they do see the little ones. They even have a dedicated LCC terminal I would expect sees nothing but single aisle a/c. A few years ago Haneda would have been as close to an airport with significant ops. I guess if we searched hard enough, we could come up with a few more destinations such as Easter Island.

I would add ICN to that list -- there are probably more narrow body movements than can be counted on one hand but I would be surprised if you could fill much more than two hands with narrow body movements.

I believe IC (now a part of AI) flies narrowbodies to Male.

Might be surprised. KE alone flies 32 737s. Asiana has 16 A320/A321 and 10 737s. There are flights to many Japanese cities, Chinese cities and even domestic that are operated with narrowbodies. A large percent of Japan-ICN are with narrowbodies. Not all daily but there are 14 flights. (Destinations = NGO 3, NRT 1, KIX 2, FUK 1, KIJ 1, OKA 1, KOJ 1, TAK 1, KMJ 1, KMQ 1, HKD)

Not to mention 11 domestic destinations and flights to secondary locations in China.

NRT sees few narrowbodies thanks to slot restrictions and airlines wanting to take advantage of those slots. NH and JL use some smaller aircraft to connect pax to their #1 hub but still 90% of movements at NRT are widebody. I think it comes to 9 domestic departures with a 737/A320 or smaller and 9 international with a 757 and smaller. (5=757, 3=A320, 1=A321) There is a NH 737-700ER flight coming up between NRT and someplace in India. But I don't see it in the schedule yet. That will make a total of 19 narrowbody movements at NRT...not all daily of course.
Yes...I am not a KIX fan. Let's Japanese Aviation!

Aside from a few flight(s) to Jeju Island and maybe PUS I don't think any domestic Korean traffic runs out of ICN; all other domestic Korean flights from Seoul run out of GMP. For KE at least, I think most of the domestic flights out of ICN is operated with A330's.

No way... Saudi uses the MD-90 into DXB

Also, Tunisair uses A319s into DXB ... I'm sure there's more

IPC has received the 340 as well once, plus irregular service from Air Force, the presidencial 735 and some 707... and I think the Concorde also landed there once.

But scheduled? only widebodies
