Stansted Airport: Viewing Area

Wed Jul 25, 2007 8:06 am

Just wondering if anybody here knows if Stansted airport has any kind of plane viewing area, or if the security is now too tight to allow anything like this
Thanks

There is no official viewing area (the airport is run by BAA), but the last time I was there, a couple of months ago (i.e. prior to the latest security scare), a reasonable view - though not for photography - is possible from just outside the terminal at the SW end (the UK departures end). There is also an embankment between the approach road and the railway that is accessible from the same place, but I'm not certain if the police currently allow anyone to stay there for any length of time, although I should say that the local police are familiar with plane-spotters, and so even if they have been alerted by a member of the public to 'unusual' activity, they will understand well enough when they come along to investigate.

I don't drive, so I've never been to the more popular photography spot on the other side of the airport, although I believe that was still 'open' earlier this year...

My advice would be to just go and stand by the wall outside the terminal, as directed above, and wait and see if the police come along or not. The worst that will happen is that they will ask you politely to leave the area, but hopefully they won't. Good luck!

This area is still open and is good for watching a/c landing or taking off dependent on whether they are using runway 5 or 23

You should be fine standing there providing you are not on the nearby bridge as security don't seem to like this

Indeed they do not - they even put up signs to make sure people don't use the bridge for viewing. Bah.
