What Is A US DOT Filing?

Wed Jul 25, 2007 10:09 pm

I have heard the term used before in aviation.

What exactly is a USDOT filing? I was approached and asked for one of my goods to be used in a US DOT filing.
Wondering what it is.

Thanks for spreading the knowledge.

United States Department of Transportation (DOT) filing. Airlines file applications to fly routes with the DOT. The jargon is appearing frequently on this forum because of the competition for new routes between the USA and China.

Airliners.net has many forums. It has spell check and search functions. Use them before posting!

It's rather basic. It can be about 1 of 1000 different topics. All it means is that you, the airline, anybody, can make a "filing" with the DOT to express an opinion, file for international route authority, file applications to operate, etc. If you want to file something yourself, feel free. Many things are open to public comment, such as EAS, International Route Applications (especially China), a carriers application for operating authority, etc. These are managed by the Document Management System (DMS) arm of the DOT. You can find it at http://dms.dot.gov.

Hope this helps

More importantly, the DOT deals with a hundred of non aviation related issues as well.

Everything from highways, maritime issues, inter-city transport, consumer safety, pipeline and hazardous materials, medical issues including drug/alcohol and disability, railway transport, environmental pollution are all some things the DOT has its hands in.
From the desert to the sea, to all of Southern California
