Arik Air Purchases 4 Q400's

Wed Jul 25, 2007 10:46 pm

Hey all,

Arik Air ordered 4 Dash 8-Q400's from Bombardier. This airline seems to be expanding rapidly. Will these aircraft be used to replace the Q300's that Arik Air leases from Denim Air? Arik Air seems to like the product line offered from Bombardier, as they already operate the CRJ200 and the CRJ900. They also operate the Q300 and the Boeing 737-300/700.

I am surprised.

The airline is expanding rapidly in fleet size, but they actually fly to very little places compared to fleet they have. They claim to be the largest airline in Nigeria now, a title which was held by VK until recently.

Surprising news! The three CRJ-200's are staying idle at the moment, as well as the two B737NG's. Perhaps they will deploy the Boeings on the announced West Coast routes, and use the Bombardiers on the domestic routes. But at the moment there are no definite plans for expansion.

Any idea when they will be delivered? The Q300's were leased for a period of a year and will be returned spring 2008.

That's a real shocker! Its somewhat unexpected for this airline to make any new orders ( Especially for domestic purposes) as they have a serious crew shortage problem. Why won't they focus more on their proposed commencement of International flights to the UK and US?

I love the Q400's. They are quick, quiet and very comfortable a/c.

Does anyone know how good Bombardier's maintainance and after sales support is in Africa?I have heard that it isn't the greatest (outside North America). I hope this is not true because Nigerian Aviation History has not been good so far.

In East Africa, major regional carriers such as Precision Air and Fly540 use several ATR 42/72. Even though operating economics favour ATR's over the DHC / Q Series, I'm assuming this also has alot to do with ATR's already well established base there.

Is that a joke? Bombardier's service support is nonexistant, even in North America... The new build ones we are getting from Bombardier are lemons. They have more problems than they are worth.

That's odd, since sales have been picking up lately. Horizon seems satisfied, despite some early issues. Care to be more specific?

That's surprising. Are you sure that your troubles aren't those early problems that several new a/c have until they have been configured properly?

Unless you consider that our problems are also occuring on the planes that have been in our fleet since the very begining... They are all lemons.

Your credibility will improve dramatically if you cite some specific examples. "They are all lemons" isn't going to cut it.

How about the fact of a KMFR from KSEA having to flagstop KEUG for 3 nights in a row because of a different Q400 having some mech.

I know what your talking about Kris, I see it everyday too, its sad to see us getting rid of the Dash-8 200.
SKYHIGH Airlines- It's important that we get the SkyHigh message out there. That message? Thank you for your money.

Add to that a ferry flight set up for EUG to protect a morning flight almost every night this week, 4 times so far. Or the fiasco on WED where almost every GEG-SEA q400 was delayed 1 to 2 hrs. Or 2357 GEG-PDX being ontime about 23% of the time do to MX dealys.

We have had one of our newest airframes come in for bleed air work twice now in the past week (two completely seperate issues both times), multiple props have nearly seized up and not come unfeathered (this has happened about eight times now, on six different aircraft, all different props), one particular aircraft keeps giving us engine fault codes that keep reappearing (We are following the Bomardier tech support instructions on that plane, and they are no help), we just had a main tire seize up after a main bearing failed, destroying the axle and brake.

There are many more. There was a day about a month ago when two thirds of our Q400 fleet was down for mx. That should be a sign right there. I have heard that the pilots are not very happy with the aircraft as well, and I know for a fact that the mechanics dislike the aircraft.

It is very dissapointing to have such aircraft in our fllet. We are getting rid of a very reliable workhorse, and now will depend mostly on a aircraft that has a severe dispatch reliability problem... I will miss the DHC-8-202s very much.
