Why No Late Night Check In With CO

Thu Jul 26, 2007 12:02 am

Hi!

I will be flying on a weird overnight itinerary via EWR in September (and October on the way back) and I have to spend the night in EWR. Now I looked at the CO website and it says that I cannot check in my bags in the evening, although my flight leaves before 8 AM, which is a common cut off time here in Europe for late night check ins. I can't imagine that it has a lot to do with capacity, since most people probably do not use this kind of service, but the few that would, would truly benefit from it.

Thanks for the info!

The standard time limit for bag-check prior to scheduled departure is four hours.

Hoi Ushermittoch

The concept of "Abend Check-in" when you come to the Airport the night before, check your bags and receive your Boarding Passes for your flight tomorrow, is totally unknown outside Switzerland and Germany.

I don't know if any a.netters in CH or DE could explain the history behind it, but from the passenger side, it's a really great idea.

I honestly do not recall the logic for the four hour limit.

I do remember soldiers that had left base for leave sleeping overnight in the terminal for an a.m. departure.
We were not allowed to check their bags the night before; we often would provide a pillow and blanket and occassionally a meal voucher though (small airport and a remnant of the good ol' days).

From a practical standpoint, we simply did not have room in the back to hold bags for extended periods. IIRC, their were also security issues to consider (not to mention liability). This was all well before 9/11.

I'm sorry I don't have a better explanation.

The logic is so the airports don't become huge locker rooms for bags checked 12-24 hours and more before the flights. There is no room to store them and the liklihood of them getting lost in the shuffle is much greater with a greater number of bags around. Also, 12-24 hours out, you have less control of whether or not the flight will actualy leave on time, delay or cancel, so the airlines have no interest in being responsible for the bags that far in advance.
