AirTran Leaving Freeport

Thu Jul 26, 2007 9:00 am

AirTran will no longer offer international service after 4 September 2007. Their last service to Freeport, Grand Bahama will operate that day. At one point AirTran was offering three daily flights to Freeport - two from Atlanta and one from Baltimore. It is unfortunate to see these flights end.

Freeport, which has pre-clearence, still has a decent selection of transborder options, with non-stops to Atlanta, Charlotte, Fort Lauderdale, LaGuardia, Miami, Orlando, Philadelphia, and West Palm Beach. Despite losing AirTran, they won't be without lowfare service for long, since Spirit starts service in December. The airport benefits from having US pre-clearence.

Old news bro-1 week at least

Caribbean/Caribe/Caraibes Aviation Part 17 (2.0) (by BWIA 772 Jul 3 2007 in Civil Aviation)

They are leaving because the landing fees in FPO are being raised this fall. Too bad, I will miss them, maybe this will allow Delta to upgauge it's flights and pave way for further expansion from Spirit.

AirTran provided 1x daily flight using the 717 (Flight number 34)

I'm not sure the 2nd daily ATL-FPO ever operated. Hurricane Whatever did a number on the Bahamas before the flight started.
I work for Southwest, but the views expressed are my own and do not necessarily represent those of Southwest.

Did they or are they ever going to start service to CUN? I know they were poised to do it last year or the year before, but the hurricane (don't know which one) put a damper on that. I know they said they were going to restart it but FL doesn't have it on the map. Anyone know what the deal with this is?

Quoting Acey559 (Reply 3):

I would think they are planning to becuase in the SEC filing they submitted about the proposed merger with YX, it shows them flying MKE-CUN as well as to SJU. I'm pretty sure MKE wouldn't be the only city to see this service, especially with all those 737s coming online.
Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

I see. I remember when they first announced service it was from ATL, so I wonder if they're still planning that as well. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how everything pans out.
