Jet Airways Orders 3 B773ER, 7 AT7, Leases 6 More

MUMBAI, July 26 (Reuters) - Jet Airways India Ltd. (JET.BO: Quote, Profile , Research), the country's top domestic airline, said on Thursday it had exercised an option to buy three additional Boeing (BA.N: Quote, Profile , Research) 777-300 aircraft scheduled for delivery in May, October and November 2009.

Jet Airways has also purchased seven ATR 72-500 aircraft scheduled for deliveries between December 2008 and July 2010, and leased six ATR 72-500 aircraft, scheduled for delivery between November 2007 and November 2008, it said in a statement.

Well 9W needs one ATR just to replace VT-JCE which I assume has to be written off after it suffered structural damage on an overrun at Indore.

But back to the point, the intention for this order was made some time ago. Even though given 9W's aggressive plans for international expansion they will need a lot more than 13 77W's!

The AT7 order is interesting - while international traffic will drive airlines going - aviation to secondary cities is booming in a major way. Once DEL, HYD and BLR get new airports - especially with new runways which will increase aircraft movements per hour this is going to go up even further! Heck I have to travel to Punjab (Ludhiana) next week and while Ludhiana is a top-50 city in India it has no connectivity - and I'll have to spend four hours in a not-so-fast train... Sad
I'ld rather fly anyday!

Great news - though I wonder why it's only 3 additional 77Ws. As cricket mentions, they'll need more to really expand and grab market share.

As India is focusing on opening up secondary and tertiary airports (classic case was the announcement to open a civil airport at Karwar), a large fleet of ATRs will help 9W. Plus it can help replace some of the CRJs that S2 has currently and ensure fleet commonality.

2 for daily BOM-PVG-EWR

2 for new daily India-BRU-JFK

2 for new daily India-BRU-ORD

2 for new daily India-BRU/China-LAX

2 for new daily India-EU-IAH or IAD (possibly)

1 for daily BOM-LHR

I wish it were that easy - 9W will be basing some77W's in DEL as well - though according to the way things look right now the A332's are in DEL and the 77W's are in BOM for the time being. I assume some of the 332's will also be used on some routes...

I was not aware they intended to do this route.

I believe SFO will commence before LAX on this route.

So, how many is 77Ws is this for 9W now? Eight?

Good to see them growing. I think the best thing that could happen to Indian carriers - AI/IT/JW - is for something to be done about airport connections in India. I know a new terminal is being built at DEL, presumably one being planned at BOM (?), but all Indian international airports seem to have separate Intl and domestic terminals, making connections inefficient and uncomfortable. If something could be done about that and even if one Indian carrier could have its own combined Intl/domestic terminal at either BOM or DEL, I think they could do quite well. India is very well placed geographically (if it wasn't where it was, I'd suggest it move there  Wink) - in just as good a position as DXB or DOH to act as a hub, but the quality of its airports really works against it.

9W has invested a huge amount in its service product, but you have to wonder, what's it like for someone who gets off the 77W after a nine hour flight in First Class, trying to connect to a domestic flight at BOM, having to get through a terribly run down terminal, then find a bus for a 15-20 minute drive to the domestic terminal. Not a good image.

I don't know about BOM, but by 2010, DEL will have an integrated domestic and international terminal, so connecting will become easier and much more user-friendly.

Give the airports 4 to 5 years, they will then compete with the best airports of the world  Smile

How feasible is it for the airlines to have their own terminals in BOM and DEL so that seamless connections can be made between domestic to domestic, domestic to international and international to international? Guess the land has to be found, customs authorities convinced, security in place etc.

I am surprised that they chose not to order any 772LR. Seems like Jet is committed to its one-stop North America service strategy for now. It is possible for Jet to do the following city pairs non-stop with 773ER:
BOM-EWR/JFK
DEL-EWR/JFK/ORD

yes I know, thats why I wrote for certain routes "India-BRU or China-USA"....the routing combinations that Ive mentioned have been also mentioned by 9W management to the media over the last few months and its not my wish list except for the DEL-PVG-LAX routing combination.

I don't see any mention of YVR. Does this mean that 9W has decided not to fly there?

In addition to Newark and Toronto, he said. "We'll start service to JFK, San Francisco, Chicago and L.A. (Los Angeles) in the next year."

So, Jet Airways' long haul routes are / will be:

AMD-LHR -- A330-200
ATQ-LHR -- A330-200
BOM-LHR 2x daily -- 777-300ER
DEL-LHR -- 777-300ER
BOM-PVG-SFO -- 777-300ER
(India)-BRU 2x daily -- 777-300ER, 3x daily -- A330-200
BRU-LAX -- 777-300ER
BRU-ORD -- A330-200
BRU-JFK -- A330-200
BRU-EWR -- 777-300ER
BRU-YYZ -- A330-200

That calls for 13 777-300ERs and 13 A330-200s. Isn't that exactly what they plan to have?

True, but some of the w/b's will be sent to other parts of Asia and possibly Oceaniaaswell. 13+13 leaves them with no operational flexibility. From all accounts 9W's service on Y to SE Asia is still behind the competition, great IFE but 9W's 737's have crappy pitch for a five-hour flight.

Yes, it is possible, but the 77Ws will be quite load restricted, the only aircrafts who can do those routes without any restrictions and are currently in service today are the 772LR/345/747-400 ER.

Initial reports suggest the flight to be BLR-BRU-JFK on the 77W, to begin either 15th feb, or most probably when the BIAL opens for operations

Just received the Sept 07 issue of Airways; the total number of orders for the 777 (all pax versions) is 893, with 78 for the freight versions; a total of 971, and - with the addition of the three 9W orders just announced, this brings the total to 974.

Just 26 to go to the big Thousand!

Well, Jet Airways is impressing me more and more. I like the idea that they are buying more AT7s. They are fuel efficient and not too expensive to operate.

Plus under certain DGCA norms they get major discounts and subsidies for light weight aircraft especially the ATRs

possibly but what i feel is they will shift A332/77Ws as the demand for the route increases or decreases

But as u say even i am of the opinion that LAX and ORD will be 332s atleast initially.

I feel the AMD flight will continuoe on to ORD, considerable Gujrati population

I guess the 9W picture will become a bit clearer within the next year or so! But the AT7 move is a smart move. I'm still puzzled as to why 9W never took up the Letter of Intent they had signed with Embraer for E-190's.
