Cargo360 Buys Southern Air, Southern Name Retained

Fri Jul 27, 2007 10:39 am

Basically, Oak Hill Capital Partners, the portfolio holders of Cargo360 out of Seattle have purchased Southern Air Holdings, Inc. out of Norwalk, CT. From the sounds of things, Southern Air management, directors, etc. will be retained and the company will continue to be called Southern Air.

So, the lovely grey/maroon 747s (and were to be 777 freighter operators with an unannounced order for 6-see the release) will eventually vanish from the ramps and sky.

I sure would miss Cargo360's livery! This would be a great opportunity for Southern Air to change their branding.

Unfortunately, if the Southern Air name is retained, their rather boring livery will likely be retained too in favor of Cargo 360's distinctive gray and white.

Why not just paint the aircraft in Cargo 360 livery with "Southern Air" titles?

Because
1) It would confuse the heck out of everyone who doesn't read a.net
2) Southern Air has more planes than Cargo 360 ergo it is cheaper to repaint Cargo 360's fleet.

I disagree, not to be argumentative but with the same argument that is used for the Delta constant rebranding not having a significant impact. All planes need to have their paint jobs refreshed/repainted, so over time there is no savings or additional cost.

Not to say they won't key the Southern livery for the other reasons stated. We can only hope, but I agree that passionless moneymen (and women  Wink ) will likely not care about "the looks".

Who cares how freighters look? The freight they carry? Even UPS (one of the most uptight about its corporate image) flies some of theirs in white. Cathay's stripped them bare and applied cheap polish. They look $hit. Some can't even be bothered to repaint theirs from their previous owners' colours. The only ones who do care are the ground controllers. But if they can handle the myriad of BA World Tails (not implying they like them one bit) then there's no problem with an Emirates Cargo in TNT colours.

I actually think the Silver Bullets look fantastic, especially on a sunny day!

There was a lot of talk about this in the office yesterday, a lot of employees have been worried the last few weeks amid rumors of this, because they didn't want to have to move HQ or anything. It doesn't look like that will be the case though.

Most of us in operations spent the afternoon yesterday "oo"-ing and "ah"-ing over what Oak Hill owns...we're thinking free burgers from Burger King!  Wink

Damn!! When Oak Hill announced their order for 6 777-200F's, I was really looking forward to seeing them in Cargo360's beautiful livery. . . Sad
