Taxiway Width And New Taxiway At BOM-why? (pic)

Fri Jul 27, 2007 8:13 pm

Hi guys,

The other day while spotting, Nitin and i were wondering why this new taxiway was built at BOM. If you see inthe picture below, the lighter coloured (concrete?) taxiway is a new one. Earlier, the aircraft had to come out straight (from behind the MD11) and straight onto the main runway 27. But recently, they have built this extra taxiway, which seems to be a little broader than the older one. Is there any particular reason for this? Is this something to do with making the airport A380 ready?

Secondly, if you notice, for some reason, (see the last plane coming up to hold for take off), the planes have been swearving around soemthing, its either some kind of pothole or something but all the planes were coming down the taxiway and then swerving around something (like a large turn around something). It was rather strange.

Thirdly, is there any internationally specified taxiway breadth? Maybe for an internation airport. And does anyone know more about that notice SQ and EK have in their operating manuals about how runway 27 (the mainone) is not optimum or something or not upto the safety standards, or something of the like. Any more information about that?

Thanks alot for any feedback.

Looking at the overhead of BOM on google earth I'd say that the new taxiway is just a time saver to allow full runway length to be used instead of backtracking. The additional length is 240m, but could be important.

The taxiway that the B757 is coming off used to be yellow crossed (on GE picture) so there may have been some work in progress at the intersection (filling in a hole or replacing material to return it to use) and planes can't cross it until it's complete.

edit..

The new one is taxiway A4 according to this

http://www.domain-b.com/aero/20070413_taxiways.htm

About 240 metres in length, taxiway 'A4' has been built as a bridge over the Mithi River and will join one end of the main runway to the other. This was a gap that was previously not covered. The taxiway runs parallel to runway 09/27.

yes it does, if u see in the above picture, there is a bridge kind of structure towards the centre of the picture, between the taxiway and the main runway. That is where the river flows. hmmmm hold on, you really cant even call that a darn river, i saw it for the first time and was shocked, its just a big stream with jet BLACK water and smells like a million mens faeces! Oh wait.. it is a million mens faeces! Lol.

I was rather amused when i heard its a river.

I dont think that plays a big role in the flooding, its the just way the runway and taxiways are built, when i flew out of BOM on the 21st, it was pouring and you could tell that most of the water was stangnating ont he runway and taxiways.

Plus the runway also doesnt seem to be pretty level. Other than these things, BOM is a spectacular airport! I mean no where else do u get such diverse traffic and such good spotting locations.

Read in the Times Of India earlier this week that SQ policy is not to land on a certain runway because of the proximity of the control tower from the end of said runway.
