Piedmont Dash 8 Finally Painted

Sat Jul 28, 2007 1:29 pm

Caught my first glimpse at a Piedmont Dash 8 in the new US Airways colors today at HVN. I guess they finally decided to start painting them. Sorry the photo is a little blury.

Is that a -200 or -300? I know some of Mesa's PHX-based -200s have been painted, but none of the -300s before now (if it is a -300).

That, and I'm desperate to know....will it be coming to PHF or ORF soon? I may just have to break out the ol' camera for this bird.

Congrats Piedmont on your first repaint in the new livery. This Dash sure looks sharp.

The new colors look great on the Dash. I can't wait to see -300 painted. Hopefully we will see them in MDT soon.

About time they painted those Trash 8's, working a PIT seeing those dumpy looking Dashes makes USAirways look trashy.

I remember seeing a lady coming down the jetway to get on a Dash she took one look and said "Hell NO!" and turned around and walked backed up to the agent.

But anyway their planes need painted badly. Or better yet get them new ones..

Yeah, and the Saabs and 1900s look alot better. I hate people like the ones you are talking about. An airplane has never crashed because the paint was faded and cracking. Sure our Dashes are old but that doesn't make them unsafe. I have been through a lot of sh!T flying a Dash, and I can tell you they fly just fine on one engine.

OK on 7/27 in HVN it could have been any of the following A/C as all of the below were showing arrived from PHL that day

US 4526 931HA
US 4507 826EX
US4210 908HA
US4550 838EX
US4366 814EX

838EX was the first one painted, followed by 912HA. There is another in the paint shop now that should be finished in a day or two. The contract to paint was for 20 aircraft going nose to tail.

No -300s are scheduled to be painted as far as I know. Only some of the -100s which are owned. All the -300s are lease aircraft.

Settle down there son. You're trashing my aircraft and It's not something I take lightly (especially if you're not flying them). And if you want to talk about trashy, look at the US 737's with CHUNKS of paint falling off and fading. Now those are trashy. So for the time being D328, just keep your mouth shut.

I have flown on many of these and also worked many of these and yes some of them are in bad shape paint wise. Remember that the paint on an aircraft will not stay factory fresh to long due to the various conditions that the aircraft may incounter (snow, rain, temp changes, etc.) Are they safe? definatly. DASH-8's are built like a brick $hit house and just because you may see a little paint falling off don't mean the wings are about to fall off. I believe that EN is looking at replacing them anyway with posibly the ATR-42/72 or something along that line if I remember correctly but that will not happen overnight so they are here to stay for atleast a few more years.

I haven't heard anything to that extent. Only thing I recall about the US regionals and Props was the Q-400.

Glad to see those Dashes finally sporting the new colors! I sure hope they stick around for a while.....it'll be sad the day they finally go. Maybe EN will get Q400s.....or Bombardier will develop an advanced 37 seater.....to replace the -100/200s.

Those things will be around at Peidmont for a while yet to come. Peidmont only flies the 100 and the 300. It would be nice to see some Q400's over on that side of the family but me thinks that it will be a mixed order of ATR's because of the two sizes available. I wonder how they will deal with the iceing issues that ATR's have though up north in the winter IF it were to go that way. The ATR is a fine airplane as I have ridden a few on Eagle. The entire fleet save for the pair Peidmont parked should be getting the full paint work up as they rotate the schedule but I am not a Peidmont guy so I will ask my buddy who is a Peidmont guy.

According to their website, Bombardier still offers the -200, -300, and -400. The current fleet could be replaced with new Dash aircraft. I really hope the folks in PHX don't pick the ATR. I share your concern about winter ops.

I am a Piedmont guy. The ATR is just to try to get the price of the Q400 down. Common type for our 100s, 300, and the Q400. So why would we leave a type we have flown for 20 years and move to another prop?

EN is Air Dolomiti (as per the website), which already operates the ATR-42/72 family. In fact, they operated DHC-8-300s for a short period before replacing them.

That is what we saw on a paper that was posted at our station. It didn't say that EN was going to definatly get the ATR but that US was accepting offers from Bombardier and Avions de Transport Régional for a possible Dash replacement. Just because you have flown a specific kind of aircraft for many many years does not mean that it will not be replaced. Look at PSA(US Airways Express carrier) who flew the J-31 then the D-328 then went to the CRJ-200/700's.

EN is the designator for Piedmont Airlines (US Airways Express) The web site as I have found out is sometimes out of date when it comes to correctly identifying airline codes.

Dash 8's aren't trashy, but the way Piedmont seems to keep them they are trashy. And how they "touch up" the paint on them is funny using a paint brush. I've seen the brush marks.

Are you referring to the employees of US that make it trashy or you think it is trashy just because a little paint is missing from the plane? Good to see these birds being painted and hopefully the 300's will be. I fly into ELM on the 300's.

And even if there were brush marks where it was touched up with paint does that make the aircraft unsafe? doubt it. Oh wait I think I will go into work tomorrow and request that a memo be sent out to the MTC department stating that because D328 does not like brush marks on the DASH-8's we fly we should bring any of them in that need a quick paint touch up, strip them down and repaint them so the dime size chip of pain that fell off is covered in an even non-brush stroke way. The aircraft are safe. Bitching about the paint is a losing cause. B6 just called they want to know if you need a refill?

I am sorry that I think it's funny how cheap and patheic how they take care of them. I would fly on them any day of the week, I love flying. But after working at US I won't fly them out of my home airport just to get delayed in PHL for the day,and I don't want to spend money on the service I won't be getting.

And since US ordered new planes, are they thinking about order new Dash 8's?

So flame for saying the planes are in crappy condition. It's true. How about you get over it. They may fly well but do something for the looks and inside the cabin for the people who fly on them everyday. I've heard pax get off and look at those planes saying how dumpy it was. I've had family members say it too about the Dash.

And the employee's it's the RUDE ones who make me never fly US Air again and because of PHL. I only encountered one nasty lady at Piedmont. But I didn't not like how the Pilots/FA's I noticed with MOST airlines and yes Piedmont LOOK DOWN on us ramp agents. Thinking they are better them us.

With all do respect I never had issues with the dashes besides paint issues, but you should check out some Comair CR1's and CR2's I have seen...and flown on. Perhaps you are just anti prop?

710, you have it right. I do not feel our employees are trashy. I've met some of my best friends at this job, and think of almost everyone I fly with as family. I enjoy working with the ground personnel as much as the inflight personnel.

It is merely the airplane itself. While the Dash is an excellent airplane, ours are tired. Putting a coat of paint on makes them look nice on the outside, but it doesn't take the 20 years of hard flying off the airframe.

Anti-prop? Have a look at my name. D328. Dornier 328, the one turbo-prop I would love to fly on, best looking plane ever. I love props. Saab 340s, Embraer 120, Beech 1900, and yes been on the Piedmont Dash's and Air Nova Dash's. I'd rather fly a turbo-prop than a jet any day of the week.

Last CRJ I was on was ASA was one of the cleanest planes I had ever been on.

They should have painted the Piedmont birds a long time ago.

When you board on stairs, you inspect the aircraft visually. If it looks like crap, it suggests something is wrong with the airline. There's no justification for that.

The Dash-8 is a good durable aircraft so for the love of god, paint it, vacuum it, make it look decent. And people will think it's a nice plane.

They are not jets, but they are fuel sipping, comfortable wide cabin turboprops that work great in 2007.

And for impressions, first impressions mean something to me, as for most people I believe. Just keep them clean, update those seats(all were hard and kind of dirty when I was on them). And most of all paint those faded, chipping paint, planes. Or try to invest in the newer Dash's.

I think most regionals should use turbo-props over the guzzling RJ's.
If I could have a regional airline I would use Dash's.

Colgan, Piedmont, Gulfstream, and whoever else just use turbo-props have it right.

Pretty much everything 328 said about the PDT Dashes is right on. They're tired and in need of replacement. The best replacement being another Dash.

After reading his posts again, I don't think he aimed the "trash" comment at the employees. (except for the one comment, which is fine. Not everyone is having a good day at the same time, and some are just flat out disagreeable)

I do know that KSBY was expecting an ATR arrival one day last week or two...

Let me guess D328 your a B6 Kool-aid drinker?

Easy killer  wink . You don't like someone lumping everyone into their supposed stereotype of an airline, so don't do the same. Cheers,

PDT confirmed that they had Bombardier and ATR in SBY last week for initial discussions.
