Sterling - You Now Have To Pay For Your Luggage

Sat Jul 28, 2007 8:39 pm

Because of the harsh market in the airlineindustry amongst the cheap competitors, Sterling will from autumn on put a pricetag on bringing your luggage with you..........................

0-15 kg: 5 USD
15-20 kg: 30 USD
20-25 kg: 55 USD

And this is for one way only !

You also have to pay 8.50 USD for every kg you have in excess luggage.

Thats quite reasonable. Most people won't have more than that anyway, especially on the short intra-scandinavian and shorter intra-european flights. Their fares are good, so I don't think these luggage charges are over the top. However the gap between 0-15 and 15-20kg is quite large. This might be an indication that they want to try to limit people's baggage, for whatever reason.

does this include charter flights???
Just thinking that a family going on holiday for two weeks is going to end
up paying quiet a lot...
As a example holiday makers here mostly seem to travel with a case each
and I bet almost all are over 15kg....

Hope this is not going to become a trend....

Well that's not so bad. The 55 $ is a bit high if you ask me. So 5 USD for me.  Smile never have more if I check.

Perhaps they charge you for hand bagage instead...
Why is it priced in USD?

Well, when you're paying the price of a happy meal for your airline ticket I guess charging for luggage is fair enough..... However, Sterling claims it's because of weight reduction.. what about fat people then??!! Or generally people above average weight... I'm at 92 kilos, guess I should pay some penalty, too..

Stefan Vilner, Sterling' previous commercial manager who fled the company a couple of months ago, also claimed that it wasn't to make money from luggage charges, nor was it to save money on fuel for them - it was for THE ENVIRONMENT only... CO2 reduction... OH come off it!!! How stupid do you think people are...! I just read that Sterling also - no, I'm not joking - has removed two out of three inflight magazines (leaving just one per two rows) to save fuel..! Now, I'm not pro extra fuel consumption, and of course every little bit helps, but that's just silly.... doing it to save costs of printing the magazines, fair enough though...

I'm sure the old Maersk people at Sterling (probably down to the last few) are cursing the luggage charges....

The prices are quoted in USD, simply because I made the conversion for you. We're serviceminded here in Norway, you see  Smile

There is no charges for handluggage.

This is a good idea, it will increase revenue without having to increase fares.

Don't know for sure. However there are many big oilcompanies here in Norway, including American based in Houston. However if it's enough to start traffic, I don't know.
