What Happened To The 'Musical Notes' At MIA?

Sun Jul 29, 2007 6:00 am

Anyone who's flown through Concourse A at Miami International Airport when it was still the newest part of the airport will know what I'm talking about.

After going through security at Concourse A, you turn to the right and are greeted with a pair of moving walkways to take you to the gates.

The windows along this hallway were decorated to resemble a xylophone or similar instrument, and as you walked down, you would hear a musical note corresponding to your along the keys of xylophone. I remember seeing couple of skilled passengers even managing to play snippets of songs before tiring themselves out.

Then, on another trip through Concourse A around 2004 or 2005, I noticed that the windows had been blacked out, and no music played as you walked down the hallway. What was once a light and colorful hallway became dark and depressing (not unlike much of the airport, unfortunately).

I remember hearing that this system cost thousands, if not hundreds of thousands to install, so I started wondering what happened to it. Why was it axed after only 5 or 6 years in operation? I remember it being a great way to start an international trip.

Concourse A is going to close down soon to speed up the construction of AA North Terminal project, I am guessing this is why the windows were blacked out and the system was taken away.

Why would they have to close it? Isn't Concourse A (much like Concourse D) already renovated?

Concourse A was new from the ground-up. They are closing it in order to significantly speed up the construction of the north terminal. Concourse A is being merged into Concourse D and having a train installed on the roof.

When are they supposed to close it? So AA will be on high E again?

It was actually a piece of art called the Harmonic Runway and it was absolutely beautiful on a sunny day. Especially before the construction started and they had open windows and colored glass on both sides of the hallway (one side was the concourse and the other side was the walkway to the FIS area).

It was taken down as part of the construction and I have heard that it was not saved and will not be back.

Concourse A will close in November or December.

AA is moving to gates in High E.

The security check point for E has been moved out so that the E Admirals club (which was closed when the A club opened but will now reopen when A closes) and the escallators to the trains for High E are all inside security.

AA has already started using three gates in High E and has closed three gates on A.

LAN is moving to the new J on 8/21.

Taca is moving to J.

British Airways is moving to F.

It is estimated that Concourse A will be closed for about three years while the buildout is completed.

Edit: The post above must've been written while I was typing my own post. Thanks, AJMIA for the post explaining what the Harmonic Runway was!

I noticed that when I went to the airport two days ago. Behind the escalators, there used to be check-in desks for airlines that had limited MIA service.

Why are they moving AA's oneworld partners to the other side of the airport? Wouldn't it make sense to keep BA and LA at E? Not that I mind LA being moved to J, since they're the airline I fly on the most, so iI get a pretty good chance of flying out of J in the next two or three months.

Is J still slated to be the Star Alliance concourse? Were the problems with the hours at the new FIS sorted out?

I know that the two concourses are being merged, and that a people mover will be constructed on the roof (I've seen the semi-completed stations at Concourses A and D), but how will closing the concourse help speed up construction? Does any major structural work need to be done on the publicly-accessible parts of the terminal? Won't it worsen things at MIA to have the airport lose 20+ gates?

Concourse A is closing to speed up the construction process. It will give all the workers and materials easy access to the construction site without having to go through airport security and an active terminal to get there.

It should not be a problem giving up the gates in Concourse A, because the closure is scheduled for after the new Concourse J opens. Once that happens there will be plenty of gates for everyone. I am not sure if all the partners will move to back to Concourse A once it reopens. The new North Termial might just be all for AA. Maybe the will put all the partners on High E or F.

Will the security checkpoint at Concourse A at least remain open, giving passengers an alternative to the long lines at D and E? (this is assuming that the construction workers aren't going to enter the concourse through the 3rd floor like passengers normally do) Or will both the landside and airside portions of A be closed?

British Airways was looking for a place to build a temporary Terraces Lounge while their Terrace Lounge at A closes. Any updates on that?

Additionally, will they do any work to fix the leaks in ceiling at Concourse A? I'm not normally one to complain about MIA, and I admit that I found my "preflight shower" refreshing, but a world-class airport like MIA can really do without leaky ceilings.

will F and G be closed? They were a dump, and E and D are not that much better, MIA is stuck in the 70s.

I assume you are referring to the low D gates, because the high D gates make up one of the nicest terminal areas in the United States. The low D gates will be entirely redesigned.

F and G won't be closed, but very few airlines will still be using them. Nearly two dozen airlines will be moving to H and J next month. G's a dump, F is certainly not. F is in good shape, it just has too much of a 80s feel to it.

MIA is considering a plan to charge reduced rates at F and G for low-fare airlines. It hasn't made much progress, but will step up in priority when J opens. There will be a lot of moving/shifting at MIA until 2010. LAN, for example, will only be at J temporarily. MIA is trying to get AirTran to really expand at MIA and make use of more gates in F or G. Initial results have been successful. They have gone from just having Atlanta service in December 2006, to having Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Indianapolis, and Kansas City by November. They are also trying to get AirTran to start Boston, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, and White Plains.

I like F precisely because it's stuck in the '80s. It gives the concourse a nice, nostalgic feel to it. Granted, I haven't flown through F in five years, but it can't have gotten that bad since then.

Is the Central Terminal going to be renovated as well?

The North Terminal is 95% renovated (A was "pre-renovated", B is gone, C will be gone soon, D only has two of the older gates left), and the South Terminal is completely renovated (H is renovated, J is also "pre-renovated"), so it makes sense to extend the renovations on to the Central Terminal.

Last I heard (Thursday) from BA they did not have a location for a new Terraces Lounge in F. They are planning on mothballing the A lounge. Not sure if they will put the furniture in storage. It is not really new so I am thinking they may just let it go and start out fresh when/if they move back to Concourse A.

If BA cannot open a new lounge I am guessing they will have to use Club America on E which is now outside security.

It will be closed.

E has a new large check point. The D check point has been expanded. The C check point is open again. B is closed and is being demolished and A will be closed for construction access.

I was under the impression AA was considering upgrading MIA-IND back to mainline again.

Also I thought MCI was in the works. I have been hearing rumors about it for a long time.

Any chance AA will get into MIA-MKE and MIA-HPN. I really think they could make more money in HPN if they offered flights to MIA and DFW in addition to ORD which is up to about 9x daily on weekdays.

MIA-MCI rumours have been around for ages. It will happen eventually. With AirTran starting MIA-MCI this fall, I was a little surprised that AA didn't react, but they still have time.

I agree. I'd love to see AA add HPN-MIA/DFW.
