Spirit To Aruba 10NOV07

Sun Jul 29, 2007 7:09 am

Discussed briefly in another thread, but definitley deserving of a new thread for those who didn't catch it.

NK 885 FLL 1100-1505 AUA 319 Sa
NK 886 AUA 1555-1800 FLL 319 Sa

A little surprised it is only on Saturdays. This marks the 40th destination in Spirit's network.

Service is now officially official:

The PR incorrectly states the service is daily, however.

Thanks for the info MAH4546. Any chance Spirit might go for CUR as well as part of their 10 destinations they are looking for to expand in the Caribbean and South America?

I, too, am surprised it is Saturday only service. Seems like there would be more demand or that they could stimulate more demand with their low fares. Heck, even United operates 3x weekly IAD-AUA service and they can't make anything in the Caribbean work!

I went to Aruba last summer for a week. It may have been my best vacation ever. Beautiful beaches, friendly people who speak English, you can pay with U.S. dollars, and you can even drink the water. Sounds like the perfect vacation spot for lazy Americans!

I think there is a mindset that Aruba is exotic and expensive, but I found it to be a great value for the money.

I went to AUA this last december for a weekend to do some aircraft spotting and it was great. On saturdays there is an aircraft taking off or landing every 15 minutes of which 90 percent originate from the United States. The airport even has its own dedicated U.S. immigrations terminal so AUA is very well known among U.S. citizens. I don't think AUA is known as an expensive holiday destination. It is very well known in the United States, particularly in the East Coast.

About Spirit starting a single flight per week may have to do with them observing the market and seeing how it plays out before they introduce more flights. Jetblue did the same for almost a year and now they have two flights on weekends and will introduce more flights (if they haven't done so already).

That's a flight that won't be needing F.I.S. upon arrival @ FLL.
For what I've noticed about AUA airport, it seems that Saturday afternoon all the gates are transborder gates with pre-cleared U.S. bound flights.
I don't work for COPA Airlines!

Those ten destinations will be selected among cities that apply for the service, so if CUR applies, it sure might be considered.

Also, to clarify, Spirit will choose "up to ten destinations", not necessarily ten destinations. They might not feel ten of the proposal are sound enough.

I think its a great move from Spirit to start AUA. Eventhough I have heard that Spirit at FLL is a bit of a mess and that the customer service overthere is terrible. Personally I have never flown them, so I might have to jump on the inaugural flight to try them.

On another note I think, in order for this route to be succesfull NK need to have at least three weekly flight. A positive aspect of this is that AA is getting some competition, hopefully AA will lower their fares to MIA.

Since its low season they operate 3 weekly flights, two from IAD, one from ORD. During high season they have 5 weekly flights.

At the moment B6 has two daily flights out of JFK and Saturday service from BOS, which will be three weekly in high season.

By design. They don't hire people with good customer service skills. The second one touts their customer service skills in an interview with them, and it seems that they might be able to back that up, their resume goes into the circular file...

The water in Aruba is better than the water in most US cities and the local beer is quite good as well. Mmmmm Balashi beer, time to book a return trip.
