SFO Landings On The 1's And The Bart Station

I was at the mill brae Station the other day and getting into my car when i saw a 767 take off from the 1 L/R unways at SFO. Now i know that there are RARE times when planes will land on the 1's. If i were to be on top of the millbrae bart parking Garage, how close would i be to the planes and do they stil land there because of the garage because it seems pretty high up its about 5 or 6 stories tall.

Nope... if they were taking off toward the bay, that would be taking off north - therefore the 1s. It doesn't matter what END they use but the direction of the flow. But you know that. The point was that he was interested in a possible north flow on landing as well.

As I said, I wasn't being picayune, but a while back I mentioned in a post about taking off on the 1s years ago, and I got 3 IMs saying "you do realize you were taking off on the 19s, right?" or words to that effect (one not said as nicely as that, however). Runway 19 departures are extremely rare (usually only during or before storms). The typical departure pattern for SFO is that Runway 01R/01L are used for the lighter aircraft (up to 767s - though the occasional 777 and 747 use it, and have seen the nightly Air France A340 go out on it). The real heavies depart on the 28s... which is the preferred runways used for landing.

I assume Apollo is meaning that he saw a 767 depart the 1's, and it made him wonder about the 1 L/R arrivals.

Apollo, if so, the clearance is obviously more then enough. I'd venture to guess they are at 400 ft when passing the garage. Now they don't actually pass over the garage either, they pass just east of it as they finish the circle-to-land approach.

This approach is done MAYBE 4-5 times per year. Its very rare, but breathtaking to watch. (a mini Kai-Tak)

..still a bit far..BayShore Park is still probably one of the best locals for watching arrivals on the 1's...

.....the mornings are great to watch a lot of heavies depart from the 1's...including B767's, B777's and B747's (primarily UA).....though I have seen a few BA's and VS' B744's depart from 1R....in fact, my very 1st post on A.net was about this subject.. biggrin 

In my 100 times being at BayShore Park, I've never seen AF's A340 take off from there..I have seen NW's A330 take off from there however..

I don't find the 19 departures to be very rare at all. The winter time bring many days that 19L/R is used for departures. During the El Nino year we went a whole month with 19 departures everyday. And I recall a storm 2 years ago that held the Asia heavies from departing for 2 days. The 1 arrivals is about as odd as 10 arrivals. S.F. weather just doesn't seem to warrant certain patterns very often.

...over a period of 365 days, its still a rare sight.......arrivals on 19's are much more frequent..

Heh, our experience is the exact opposite. It was the December 24th, 2006 AF A340 that went out on 01R - I was out photographing that night. Could have been New Year's Eve. Here's a photo.  Wink

Getting back to the original question-- I'm guessing they built the garage low enough to allow 1R arrivals. It's maybe 3000 ft from the threshold and ... 80 ft higher than the runway?

How's that compare with San Diego, anyway?

I went spotting last week Friday on top of the Millbrae BART station garage and I got checked out by security (BART police), but the officer was really friendly and not even asked for an ID or so. He just asked if I was doing it as a hobby or for a school report. And when he left, he just said, that I should enjoy the resat of my time here.
I'm really happy, that you are NOT treated like a terrorist when doing plane spotting at or near SFO and I hope that it stays that way in the future.

I totally believe you guys that they sometimes depart on the 19's (although whenever I see them landing on the 19's, they're departing on the 10's), but regarding landing on the 1's, there don't seem to be any published approaches, and I've checked multiple independent sources. Do they really ever land on the 1's? If so, what kind of approaches do they fly, visual only?

That's for sure. Ordinarily they fly the usual runway 28 approach to the San Mateo bridge (or maybe inside it) then circle to the south. Someone said he had seen a 747 (?) arrive on 1R after a straight-in approach, but no one's ever confirmed that.

My impression is, you can go thru a whole winter without seeing any runway-1 arrivals.

There are no ILS beacons on the 1s.

That was in fact one of the sources I was talking about. Further down on the list of approaches, no RNAV/GPS either.

....you lucky bugger....I have yet to see one rotate off the 1's..I'll have to drive to SFO more often in the winter season.... yes

I was in San Mateo last week and flew back on Friday. Most of the week they have been using exclusively the 28s for take-off and landings. Winds were around 20 kts from the north (300-360).

The blue UA 744 with the "South San Francisco" sign in the background is apparently landing runway 10.

You're right, luckiest day on a plane that day, couldn't believe it. Reason I have no pics because the weather was in the crapper and couldn't see the ground 100 feet after take off.! All I know is we were light as a bird because we rotated right after where 19's meet the 28's, did a 270 degrees turn and we were off and running. Believe it or not, a UA 777 was lined up to take off of 10R and I was confused whether to get excited about out 19 departure or be jealous of the guys on the UA 777.  biggrin  Jacobin777 is right though, my camera's battery was dead Sad

You're right, it was pouring that day. This was a week of firsts for me because 5 days before, we had landed on 19L while on a NW A330 early in the morning from NRT.  bigthumbsup
