How Come AS Never Flew CA To LAS Or PHX

Mon Jul 30, 2007 1:02 pm

AS seems to have quite a following, especially with a lot of the techies moving here (PHX) from CA, OR, & WA and they have a call center outside of PHX. They don't fly just hub and spoke .... they could really connect PHX/LAS to LAX for the service to MX. AA could use them as a codeshare from both PHX and LAS to LAX, freeing AE flights somewhere else. AS could do BOS, ORD, DFW, EWR, MIA, MCO, DEN (cities they already service from SEA)... DL has lots of n/s service from LAS to non hub cities, AS could too... AS could even do great with a couple of n/s flights from PHX/LAS to HNL & OGG with there 737NG. People love AS, you've got to spend a little money to make some money.

Perhaps they just don't want to piss off America West(US Airways) and Southwest?? Perhaps their planes make more money elsewhere flying more less congested routes. Who knows.

AS isnt into fast growth, but instead a steady growth, its obvious that AS and QX is and has been expanding out of LAX and now they are a rather dominate force. as QX continues to get more Q-400's and now that the CRJ's are back from F9 i think you might see some service from LAX to perhaps LAS, PHX, and SAN. im also waiting for MRY from SEA and or LAX but thats another story. I highly doubt however that we would see LAS or PHX-hawaii, besides for SEA and possibly PDX in the future the only flight to hawaii from the west coast thats even a remote possibility is SNA-HNL which is still very very far fetched.

That sums it up perfectly.

The market for PHX to LAS/SAN/LAX is overcrowded with HP/WN and Skywest. It isn't worth the risk either. AS is doing just fine with their west coast service.

I would presume because they were making more money flying from LAX to Mexican resorts than to Vegas or Phoenix. Note that WN still doesn't have nonstops from Southern California to the Pacific Northwest 10 years or so after acquiring Morris Air, so the strategy might go both ways.  Wink

I am too.  pray  I am prepared to bet that they would go SEA with a Q400 or CR7 and not LAX, because of their codeshare with MQ on the MRY-LAX route and because of strong competition from UA on that route. I doubt QX would do well with a MRY-LAX service even if it was offered by a RJ, but who knows?

I think that MRY-PDX or MRY-SEA with a Q400 or CR7 is the most likely if AS wants to fly from MRY.

If QX were to serve MRY, I think the service routine would be similar to that of STS.

BTW, I thought AS briefly flew between LAX and LAS.

They have not done that in the last 10 years, thats for sure. But anytime before that, I dont know. I'm sure EA CO AS would be able to clearify that for us.

Alaska has flown LAX-LAS

We operated 4 daily flight for a short time and was anything but successful. The flight were a tip-toe into the market with also some help by NW as they code-shared with us to feed the LAX-NRT flight. It last maybe a year and a half if I remember correctly.

Poor LF+ low yield + WN/HP almost hourly = Didn't work

Alaska moving into the Cali - Vegas routes would be the same as F9 SFO-LAS. Just not our niche

For anybody in the know, are there any plans to bring ANC-LAS back? It disappeared from the schedule a year or so ago and hasn't been back since. Is it due to aircraft allocation, or was it just not worth going up against a daily/daytime flight on US? If it's the latter, it has to be one of the few times in recent memory that AS has actually competed against another carrier on an ANC-West Coast route and not been successful.

That pretty much explains in a nutshell why AS doesn't fly from California to LAS and PHX. Getting into the fare wars between WN and HP (and in the past, United Shuttle) would be a recipe for disaster.

The line:"" There are better opportunities elsewhere."" really does apply in this case.

Didnt AS once try the TUS-LAX route?

Yup, I recall LAS to LAX around 1998 or so. The loads were awful. I remember flights going out with 20-30 passengers on them. There was way too much capacity running between with all the airlines flying the market. I think they were really hopeful on the Mexico connections. I don't even think the service lasted a full year before they pulled it.

Don't forget about QX putting in for LTO service out of LAX!  crossfingers
SKYHIGH Airlines- It's important that we get the SkyHigh message out there. That message? Thank you for your money.

It's not about congestion, it's about yield. There are many more markets AS can enter from SEA and other current AS cities that are higher yield than PHX-LAX, and since it makes more sense to deploy assets where you can make the most money, don't look for PHX-LAX or PHX-LAS service anytime soon.

Much to the chagrin of the AS employees in PHX, who are ALWAYS asking for more PHX service. They do know it's about making the most money for the company though, and the SEA/PDX and AK markets do that far better.

Incidentally, the new PHX Reservations Center (moving from Tempe to Ahwatukee) opens August 22nd.  bigthumbsup

True. 1X daily MD80 service until AC dumped capacity on AS by throwing a 744 at 'em.

Quoting Dutchjet (Reply 16):

Yes, and it was successful for a time. Ultimately the planes were able to make more money elsewhere, so the route was dropped. TUS-SJC was tried as well, without much success. (QX operated)
