2 AA Diversions Into ORD Tonight

Tue Jul 31, 2007 11:20 am

First, AAL 346 ORD-LGA, an MD-83, just broke out of a holding pattern west of GRR, now inbound. Looks like he was burning off some fuel.

Second, AAL 22, LAX-JFK, a B762. (We don't get many AAL 762's at ORD anymore.) Looks like he was dumping some fuel.

Looks like they're going to land within 5 minutes of each other.

Anyone have any futher info on these diverts?

Nothing definitive, just a guess that the LAX-JFK flight flag-stopped ORD to pick-up the LGA folks from the MD-83 that came back to ORD, assuming that they had enough empty seats to accomodate them all. Sometimes, getting them a different airport in the same city is the best you can do as far as passenger protection goes, and then getting them to LGA via bus..

Again, just an educated guess....

AA346 returned to ORD due to center tank fuel pump circuit breaker popped. Flight changed equipment and redeparted.
AA22 landed ORD due to all lavatories inop and water guage reading zero. Lavs & water serviced and flight refiled & continued.

The route was originally ORD-LGA. After diverting, the number was used for ORD-JFK. Did they use a different airplane, and if so, why a different destination?

Thanks... Pretty rare for two diversions of this same type so close to one another...hence my guess.

I noticed that too - but before they landed back at ORD. As they broke off from their holding pattern and over Lake Michigan, the flight was reassigned ORD-JFK. Weird.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty rare too. I wouldn't have even noticed if they hadn't diverted off their "normal" flight paths. I was using Flight Explorer, watching ORD arrivals, and just got lucky I even noticed them. Glad to see they got down safe and eventually made their intended destinations.

LGA has a floating curfew due to runway work in the overnight hours. On a good weather night the airport will be closed to arriving traffic after 00:30 most nights, in the event of rain and such (Like Sunday) it will remain open later to allow late arrivals.Anything arriving after curfew will go to JFK and the equipment is ferried to LGA in the morning.

So much for lavatory and potable water service every landing...

Thanks for the info, Fleet Service. I think this may be the ferry flight, which arrived this afternoon:
