Employee Benefits; BA Vs. US At PHL

Hello Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone can help me in regards to employee benefits working at PHL. I have been offered jobs by both British Airways and US Airways for the position of Customer Service Agent. I am not in it for the money, I am only in it for the health benefits and especially the FLIGHT benefits. From what I understand, US offers flight benefits from day one and BA offers limited flight benefits after 6 months and not until 12 months after do you get full flight benefits. These are both Part Time positions, in case you were wondering.

If anyone can comment on the differences/what they prefer/advice to me, I'd greatly appreciate it!

If you plan on continuing to live in the PHL area wouldn't the flight benefits on US be of more benefit overall. BA has one destination out of PHL, whereas US flies to just about everywhere out of there. Can't comment on the health benefits without seeing both plans, but as far as flight benefits go, its US hands down.

Well, BA has a more extensive international network but that probably does not matter as you would probably be getting ZED (Zonal Employee Discount) tickets, which allow you to travel on any participating airline within the specified Zone so US would be the better choice, everything else being equal. For ZED, you can visit goZED.com but you should verify that US participates in the ZED agreement, your hiring manager should be able to tell you that. I believe BA does participate but you can double check that too.

OK. What about Star Alliance benefits? If I work for US and receive all the flight benefits, would it be cheaper for me to fly on Star Alliance? Is that what GoZED is for?

If I wanted to fly SQ 21 from EWR-SIN, any idea how much that would cost me being an employee of US?

I would check into the station-specific nonrev agreements for both airlines. By this I mean that each airline has systemwide nonrev agreements, but each station may also have additional agreements that only apply at that location.

If BA has a full agreement with US then either airline would be fine, BA actually probably better overall. Otherwise, stick with US.

Does BA pay you in pounds?  Smile That would be a deciding factor!

FWIW, I know UA is ID95 with US and some of the other Star Carriers.

If you were only looking at flight benefits then I would definitely go with US. I'm sure most of your flying will be in the US, so your boarding priority on your own airline would always be better and you can always have access to the exact loads. If you worked for BA you would almost always be the very last one on the list when flying any US carrier. Also, it's probably much cheaper to nonrev if you work for US. I believe US has a very good nonrev package for their employees - something like you pay a one-time fee per year and then you fly for basically free in the US and pay taxes on international flights. That could have changed by now though. Also, you would get some benefits when nonreving on Star carriers - your boarding priorty would be above all employees working for carriers outside of Star. I work for an international Star in the US carrier in the states and I hardly ever use my benefits because it actually gets pretty pricey always flying on other airlines and can be pretty inconvenient when you dont have access to the loads.

There are more than 60, and I'm too lazy to type them all.
I just picked on at random and it's a "medium Zed" fare.
1-450 miles - $19
7101-9000 miles $85
and various prices for distances in between. Bear in mind that taxes still need to be paid but it's better than actually buying a full fare ticket.

Generally, flight benefits are MUCH better on any US/Canada airline then they are on any foreign carrier. Most US carriers charge nothing/very little for unlimited flying while foreign carriers charge you to fly on your own airline and it is not unlimited. I have a friend who worked for BA at MIA a few years ago and it was cheaper for him to fly Virgin than it was for him to fly BA, his own carrier.

That sounds exactly like what we have right now. No "flat fee" anwhere. I've never paid to fly.

Flat fee is on the guest passes, not on employee travel.

OK, so the ZED partner airlines give US employees' and other partners CHEAP airfares on their airlines, right? Since British Airways is a US Zed partner, realistically, wouldn't it be cheaper to fly BA being a US employee rather than a BA employee flying one's own airline? I am assuming this because of:

Even though i work for BA, id advise go with US.

The free internal flights are a great thing. On BA we pay, even for domestics, and the price on standby sometimes is a few pounds different to a confirmed seat, and the domestics are very busy sometimes.

Yea that's what I'm leaning towards. It seems like BA doesn't offer a great travel benefit package. I want the flexibility to fly in the US and also to Europe and Australia. Sounds like I'd be paying way more than I need to be if I worked for BA.

Wow, not bad! Just out of curiosity, how did you find that fare? Is that a fixed fare or does it depend on what day/time of year you travel? I assume its fixed since you quoted such an exact amount.

If you're going to be based at PHL, then go for US, if the travel benefits are the main thing. One thing that would require more research would be health/employee benefits. I know that BA probably offers a better package there, including days off/vacation/etc. If you work for US then you can travel much easier through the country and if you want to fly BA, just buy a ZED ticket on them and jet off to London. I'd take the 777 rather than the 767 from PHL though!  Big grin

I work for AA, so I don't know US's policies, but at AA, you get ZED and ID90 benefits in accordance with each individual airline's agreement. Most require 12 months of service, but some require only 6. At AA, if it's a nonmanagement position you get travel benefits after either 3 or 6 months, and then after 2 years you get 24 buddy passes (12 roundtrips) per annum to give out to friends. If you take a management position at AA, travel benefits are immediate. Just giving you some highlights from AA's travel program to give you a frame of reference.

If you worked for AA, it would cost you a ticket on the airline. AA has no agreement with SQ. Someone else mentioned that US doesn't either.


One thing regarding Star Alliance, Oneworld, that kind of thing. At least at AA, When two employees are flying on AA using ZED tickets. Let's say one works for USAirways and the other works for British Airways, the standby priority of a Oneworld employee is higher than that of a regular ZED, so Trekster, working for BA, would bump you possibly. Now if you both worked for Oneworld airlines, the priority would be based upon who checked in first.

I am surprised that neither AA or US have agreements with SQ. 9E has an agreement with SQ but not with UA. It would be a little more useful for me if it were the opposite. Our agreement is for ID75.

P.S. Do you guys still use Sabre, and still have focus? HAHA

SQ is not thought of as being interline friendly. They do not have an agreement with NWA either, and I know NWA has been turned down as have most other carriers by SQ.

SQ is a horrible ID75 with US and once I tried that and they didnt let me on the LAX-SIN when my ID75 is Y class (they have premium economy) and said Id have to fly the 1 stop flights. I thought of doing this a long time ago to try the A345 on a long haul route 1 way even it was not cheap. But I fly low ZEDs many times on TG LAX/JFK-BKK nowadays.

for a US employee, LAX-BKK-LAX or JFK-BKK-JFK is 211 total including all taxes round trip

As a US employee, do travel benefits start from day one of employment? If so, does day one of employment count as day one of training?

From what I remember, travel benefits come into effect two weeks after your date of employment. Your date of employment is the first day you start training.

I like US because they have an extensive US system plus many locations in Europe. WN only flies within the US. Even theough WN's benefits might be better, I am from Europe and would like to added bonus of being able to fly my own carrier to Europe on occasion. Plus, since PHL is a hub for US, they will have much more opportunity for advancement than will WN.

AA guy here. No non-rev agreement at all AA/SQ. Only agreement they have is for company business travel.

Not for International NON REV, you would be miserable with B6/FL/WN if you mostly want to fly overseas on other carriers. they are very limited in that part

As a WN employee I can actually fly US Non Rev with no problem. The only thing is that with US you have to wait 6 months after employment with WN. 3 with CO, UA and some other carriers.
