Southwest Begins Non-Stop OKC-BWI August 4, 2007

Wed Aug 01, 2007 8:07 am

Southwest Airlines will be commencing non-stop service from Oklahoma City, OK Will Rogers Airport to Baltimore/Washington airport beginning Aug. 4, 2007. There will be a 1xdaily flight. Not sure of the departure time at this moment, but I expect it will be mid-morning returning late afternoon-evening. I'm assuming this is WN's reaction to the new service on United to IAD.

Here's a current list of depatures from OKC to various destinations:

American to DFW 7xdaily
American Eagle to DFW 1xdaily
American Eagle to ORD 5xdaily
American Connection to STL 2xdaily
Champion Air to Puerta Vallarta 2xdaily
Champion Air to CUN 2xdaily
Champion Air to LAS 6xdaily
Continental to IAH 10xdaily
Continental to EWR 2xdaily
Delta to ATL 5xdaily
Delta to CVG 3xdaily
Delta to SLC 3xdaily
ExpressJet to Albuquerque 1xdaily
ExpressJet to AUS 1xdaily
ExpressJet to ONT 1xdaily
ExpressJet to Sacramento 1xdaily
ExpressJet to SAT 1xdaily
ExpressJet to SAN 1xdaily
Frontier to DEN 3xdaily
Northwest to MEM 3xdaily
Northwest to MSP 2xdaily
Northwest to DTW 2xdaily
Southwest to MCI 4xdaily
Southwest to HOU 4xdaily
Southwest to STL 2xdaily
Southwest to PHX 3xdaily
Southwest to DAL 4xdaily
Southwest to LAS 1xdaily
Southwest to BWI 1xdaily
United to ORD 5xdaily
United to DEN 6xdaily
United to LAX 1xdaily
United to IAD 1xdaily
US Airways to PHX 2xdaily
US Airways to LAS 1xdaily

Seems our little airport has gotten quite busy after the new terminal was built. Here's a few pics of the new OKC airport.

It's much better than the old relic we had from the 1960's. If I remember correctly, the stonework on the airport consists of 77 different stones that are native to the 77 counties in Oklahoma. The structure itself is quite an artistic masterpiece, combining the "new" look of airports around the world and traditional Oklahoma building ideas.

BWI has been advertising the OKC service most of the summer, along with several other carriers' service.

I'm a bit disappointed with the schedules. The OKC flight departs BWI at 5:55pm. The BWI flight departs OKC at 8:00am. The outbound is way too late for me. I might could manage an 8:00 departure from OKC, but it would be a lot better for me if it left at a later time, say between 11:00am and 1:00pm. I may fly the route one of these days anyway, bad timing and all.

The new terminal looks great. The last time I was there they had just started work on it. I'm really proud of the improvements. The plaza outside the terminal looks especially nice.

BTW, the "old relic" looked pretty good to me when I was a kid who had never been near a big city airport. I was just looking on that night long ago, because I knew it would be a long time before I would be able to fly anywhere - if I ever could. My fantasy that night was to fly to TUL. It seems kind of funny now.

You're a bit low on several of your XE counts, UAL'. ABQ, AUS, SAT and SAN are all 2x daily n/s (and the other 2 destinations, ONT and SMF, each have a 1-stop, direct flight in addition to the single n/s.)

Also, isn't CO about to start CLE n/s?

Very nice looking airport; I stopped by there a few years ago and it has really been upgraded since then.

Sorry, I just got my info from www.flyokc.com the Will Rogers World Airport website. Seems like they haven't updated in a while because they are still showing that the UA flight to IAD hasn't started yet.

Yeah, I wasn't too sure about the Champion Air flights as they are charter. I sort of figured they were how many flights in the week, but I went with what the website said.

I still would love to see a flight on WN that does OKC-BNA. There, at least I would think there would be, has got a to be a decent enough market there for a flight. BNA could be a good connection option for those wanting to bypass MDW on WN.

Plus, there's the Dell Computers connection here.

The Dell Centers in OKC and Nashville are call centers, not business or corporate offices. While there are some people who have high level access in Dell, both of these sites are not doing business "together" if you will. So there are VERY little people flying OKC-BNA because of Dell.

I know this because I worked at Dell for about a year. It sucked a big fat one.

Actually, within the last year the OKC call center has transferred mid-level managers to BNA for further training and work. I know this because one of them was my wifes boss at the BNA center. There has been, and continues to be, travel between the two call centers. And as Dell is expanding their ops. at BNA, I would think this would be more of an option in the future. Now, with all that aside, I still think that OKC-BNA would be a good flight regardless of the "Dell Factor" or not. Obviously, the higher-ups at WN don't feel that way or else they would be flying it. They feel like shuttling 37 pax a day between BNA and BHM is a better option for them.

According to faremeasure.com, there are 106 pax a day between BNA and OKC for what it's worth.

That is good for OKC!! Best luck of WN on OKC-BWI routes. I am sure that route would be good since a lot of people would like to go to DC area for vacations since many of students go to DC to learn history.

It would be nice if US would fly to OKC from the east side of the system as well, rather than just the HP side. From the Southeast, UA codeshares don't help much. US can do XNA from CLT, TUL/OKC would be nice too.

I also think WN could make OKC-BNA work, even if there isn't a lot of traffic flying that route now. Nonstop flights with the right schedule and the right price could create the demand. There have certainly always been a decent representation of Oklahoma license plates when I've driven along I-40 in Tennessee.

I concur. OKC is a great town with a wonderful airport. I, believe it or not, was quite surprised to learn that BWI was not offered from OKC.

Hey Lexy, this is the kind of new P-2-P n/s flight that we will hopefully see more of from WN now that they have cleaned house a bit and freed up resources (planes, gates, and maybe even people). I know you, in BNA, and I, regarding SAN, have a long wish list for WN. (Just as long as BNA doesn't go zooming by SAN to grab the #10 Top-10 Station slot too soon!)

I know you are frustrated after hearing WN talk for many years about their great plans for BNA but I think next year might see it (start to) happen. I'm sure you've noticed the rather abrupt leveling off of growth in most of the Mega Stations (they now have n/s flights to almost everywhere that they're needed) so new growth will slide down the trunk to some new branches. Unfortunately, SAN is pretty much maxed out on gates as of the end of this month, so I sadly don't know what our future holds, but it doesn't look real promising. It is a neat feeling to be ready to reach the 100-flight threshold! In any case, I do have my fingers crossed for you and BNA!

SAN is receiving a bunch of new flights over the next few month. WN is beginning a fourth daily from TUS and will be runninng 9 flights a day with their new service to SFO. Also, it looks like Virgin America is entering the SAN market with service to SFO and JFK.
