Flights Between The US And Iran Pre 1979

Wed Aug 01, 2007 9:05 am

Aside from IR, which other carriers, (US or Iranian) offered service. What was flown?

Iran Air flew to JFK and was considering service to LAX until the Shah was deposed. IIRC, the last 747 (SP?) for IR was "rushed" to Iran as quickly as possible to avoid the coming sanctions.

IR flew JFK-THR nonstop eastbound, but the westbound routing stopped at LHR.

In the 1948 map, Teheran is not on the destination map; however, it appears on the 1959, 1969, and the 1979 map. I have no information as to when the last flight out of THR was.

TWA flew very distant middle and far eastern routes, however, in 1955, TWA flew only to Egypt and Saudi Arabia but offered connecting service from there. Teheran appears on the 1955 and 1963 maps, but it is not on the 1967 map, nor on any of the subsequent maps.

While there were other airlines flying internationally (Eastern & Braniff to Latin America, NW to Asia), no one else extended as far as Pan Am or TWA. Those would would have been the only airlines to fly that far from the U.S. to Iran.

Pan Am flew to Teheran; in later years nonstop JFK-THR with 747SPs.

While PA flew to THR, not nonstop form JFK. THR was part of the PA1/2 round the world service instead.

I understand that and agree, but I do remember a nonstop service with the 747SPs that supplmented or replaced the RTW flight on certain days.

considering service to LAX

checkmark  I still remember the Iran Air office and Iranian cultural center on Wilshire Blvd in Beverly Hills.

Funny enough the building still stands vacant all these years later as the property was frozen as part of the embargo.

If Iran and the US were ever to normalise relations, certainly Los Angeles with the largest Iranian expat community in the US would be a prime destination for IR.

I'd love for you to find any trace of nonstop JFK-THR PA flight. I certainly dont recall such during the 77-79 timeframe.

PA's scheduled 747SP service into the region however consisted of the JFK-Dhahran oil run.

You possibly might have this confused with the THR service which via various routings was part of the PA1/2 service.

Wasnt it Bahrain that had nonstop 747SP service?

As for the THR issue, I have no back so I must let the issue go, but if anyone has Pan Am timetable from the period, please take a look as I remember this flight being launched with much fanfare.

Regards.

Yes, PA did have JFK-BAH nonstop. I only have about one or two timetables per year 1976-79, but I didn't find JFK-THR nonstop.

If my memory is correct, PA's last scheduled flight from THR was on 10 Dec 1979.

PA's 1979 annual report has a paragraph or two about the impact of suspending flights to Iran; I'll try to find it when I get home tonight.

I thought PA flew BEY-THR as part of their round the world service.

I don't remember the exact date of the sanctions implementation, but the last B747SP for IR was delivered all white on July 12th, 1979 and was ferried to FRA.

Two pictures of IR at JFK.

Until 1975, when the civil war broke out in Lebanon, PAN AM was serving THR on a daily basis.

The routing was JFK-FCO-BEY-THR as PA 1 (round around the world service) and B747 and the 747SP were used on this route .

The US broke off diplomatic relations with Iran on April 7, 1980. Excerpt from US State Dept. info on Iran below:

On November 4, 1979, militant Iranian students occupied the American Embassy in Tehran with the support of Ayatollah Khomeini. Fifty-two Americans were held hostage for 444 days. On April 7, 1980, the United States broke diplomatic relations with Iran, and on April 24, 1981, the Swiss Government assumed representation of U.S. interests in Tehran. Iranian interests in the United States are represented by the Government of Pakistan. The Islamic Republic of Iran does not have its own embassy in Washington, though it does have a permanent mission to the United Nations in New York City.
