Virgin America At LAX

Wed Aug 01, 2007 11:43 am

Hello all,

I was driving home from work today and saw a A319 of Virgin American sitting over at the Imperial Terminal. Looks pretty cool-what is it doing here?

Thanks.

Start up is 1 week away on the 8th. They also have a plane positioned to JFK already.

May I ask which terminal VX is going to be operating out of at LAX?

any word on lounge and meal offerings yet? Their website seems more focused on the seat and entertainment system, and goes into very little detail about anything else.

That's what I figured... T6 is about the only terminal at LAX with any space left for an entrant like VX.

Cool! I'm gonna have to pay attention tomorrow as I drive to/from work. I'm very interested in their product as a genuine alternative to the legacy carriers in domestic routes. Not sure if VX will be the one to shake up the industry here (as Ryanair has done in Europe), but if they offer superb service for cheaper fares than AA/UA/CO/DL etc I see them having success here

Is there anywhere to park near the Imperial terminal so we can get some photos of their 319?

I was also wondering about the inflight catering. Does anyone know of anything as of yet?

What gates are they using (and expanding to) in terminal 6?

So we now are 2 days from the launch, did they get all the authorizations they need?

I am surprised: the first flight should be in less than 2 days, and there is still no information on the "receipt of government operating authority."

Noone has any insight on this on this board?

My first post on airliners.net! Woohoo!

I can check with my sources tomorrow and see what the latest info is. At least for the inaugural flight from lax, I believe passengers were to be comprised of VX staff and friends only. Since they're not carrying revenue passengers, would a government authority be required for that particular flight?

Welcome Bruin787!

I feel lonely on that one: with the first flight tomorrow, the website still warns that the authorization is not there yet... Scary!!

No?

The former West Imperial Terminal is now the home of the Flight Path Learning Center ( http://www.flightpath.us ), a nice repository of LAX memorabilia. It's open to the public, and you might get to venture out to the former boarding area (i.e. outside the building) if you are nice to the staff and identify yourself as an aviation eNthusiast.

The latest info:

As of this noon today, VX had still not been granted "government operating authority", however since its only VX staff on the inaugural flight, it will proceed tomorrow morning as scheduled. Its the flights AFTER that where the plot thickens.

The plane for the first flight is now on the ground at LAX. Its parked over at Flightpath, and will remain there overnight while TSA, VX, and LAX finish setting up for tomorrow's festivities. The plane is N622VA "California Dreaming".

If you want to get a close up view of the plane, GO NOW. Security around Flightpath will get much tighter as the evening goes on, and you can forget about parking there tomorrow to see it depart.

I hope VX goes international some day. Something that boggles me, will they use Flight Club or will will they have their own FF program linked to Flight Club?
nice and spacious airports in need of new airlines and flights... GUA or FRS anyone?... anyone at all?

Flying internationally is not on the cards at the moment. Right now they're just trying to get in the air and grow steadily. Their FF program is called eleVAte, and at the moment they have no alliance or linked partners.

Isn't that precisely the point? VX is Virgin Atlantic Airways' domestic alliance partner... or at least it's obvious that something like that will happen once authority is granted. I don't think that SRB gave this "independent" airline the Virgin Group's logos for nothing other than to enter the already saturated U.S. LCC market.

As a side note, I can't see that VX will appeal to die hard business travelers, unless flights on VX are somehow associated with the Virgin Atlantic frequent flier program. Most transcons that are business heavy seem to be on airlines that go to places other than Fort Myers.
